? AICE English General PaperMrs. LongRoom 2-235dlong@Course Description: The English General Paper course is multi-disciplinary, which simply means that its subject matter is drawn from topics across the curriculum. This class encourages you to develop the ability to make cross curricular links; to develop a maturity of thought appropriate to students at this level; and to achieve an understanding and usage of the English language, which enables them to express arguments, ideas and opinions in a reflective and academic manner. Knowing the current issues that challenge our world will enhance the quality of your responses. However, the AS General Paper is not strictly a test of general knowledge. The key objective is for the student to convey information or opinion in a way that is thoughtful, perceptive, and immediately intelligible to the reader. In essence then, the writing skill must be finely crafted to experience the full success this course has to offer.Course Objectives:To explore and draw conclusions regarding social, cultural, economic, philosophical, scientific, literary, and technological issues. To develop and refine the skills of independent, critical, reading and writing. To promote the skills of rational thought, persuasion, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. To promote maturity of thought and clarity of expression. To promote understanding and appreciation of individual, societal, and cultural diversity.Grading Scale:Class Work 35%Tests 25%Common Lit/No Red Ink 15%Quizzes 15%Home Work 10%Common Lit Grading Plan: Once or twice a week you will use Common Lit/No Red Ink to complete Reading Lessons. Every student gets the same basic lesson, but the content is customized to match each student’s own reading level (Lexile). Doing your best on the activities will ensure the greatest match between your ability and the content delivered. It is also important that your answers to the questions reflect work completed independently and without extra assistance.Required Supplies (Remote Live Instruction)2 inch binder and dividersLoose-leaf paper An assortment of colored pens/markers/highlightersA Gmail account for easy access to Google docsSmall whiteboard (can be found at Dollar Tree or use a blank sheet of paper and sheet protector)Expo markersWhile we are holding classes via remote live instruction it is even more important for students to stay organized. They should have separate binders/ folders for each class, plenty of paper and pens/ pencils, plain copy paper, and a small dry erase board with markers and erasers for holding up answers to questions during Zoom classes. You will also need the “AICE EGP Coursebook Lessons” workbook. You will regularly answer questions and complete activities in this book. It is your choice whether to complete these assignments online or print the pages (or the entire workbook) and complete them by hand. If you choose to complete them by hand you will need to scan (using Cam Scanner) and upload all assignments for grading. If your handwriting is not legible you will not receive credit, so if you know you are not a neat writer, I encourage typing the assignments. Class ParticipationClass participation is a large part of your grade. It includes attendance, both physical and mental presence, on-task behavior, preparation, note-taking, volunteering, enthusiasm and positive attitude, attentiveness, respect while others are talking, appropriate language, appropriate behavior, respect for school property. We are together for fifty-five minutes every class to work as a team. To make the most of our time together, every person must come ready to actively participate in classroom discussions, debates, and activities. You will lose class participation credit by coming to class unprepared, being disruptive, abusing cell phone procedures, or if it becomes clear you did not do assigned reading through class discussions. Please expect to be called on during the year. In addition, deduction will occur for the following types of behaviors: Tardiness, consistent bathroom visits during class, forgotten materials, talking out of turn, foul language.Disrespect to a teacher or classmate (including bullying, name calling, etc.) is an incredibly serious offense that absolutely will NOT be tolerated. IN the rare case that this happens, the student will lose all conduct points and parents and administration will be notified. This is a college level class, and the behavior during class time should reflect that.Homework Students in advanced classes such as AICE must expect regular homework. Homework is assigned on a regular basis. Most homework WILL NOT be accepted late (unless due to an absence). Excused absences will follow school policy. It is the student’s responsibility to get their work done, including weekly work in the Coursebook Lessons workbook, and Common lit OR No Red Ink assignments. All homework assignments will have specific due dates. Students are expected to complete QUALITY work. Any work not completed during the daily lesson may be assigned as homework. Are reading assignments also homework? Absolutely! You must be ready to participate in a class discussion and debate based on reading assignments. *The completion of homework directly affects your ability to participate in class discussions and do well on assessments. Late/Makeup Work NO Late work is accepted without an EXCUSED absence. This means documentation from home or a doctor. No makeup work is allowed for an unexcused absence. When a student is absent, the student should notify the teacher upon return. The teacher will help the student gather the missing work and schedule any make up tests/quizzes that might have been missed. If the student knows in advance of an absence, the student should notify the teacher, although this does not guarantee the student will receive the work prior to the absence. Students are allowed 2 days for every day missed to turn in work.Extra Credit: May or may not be given at certain times at the teacher’s discretion.Class Rules: The Somerset Canyons Handbook and the rules and procedures contained within will be enforced in my classroom.
