Norfolk Tour Schedule

Tuesday – September 21st – Williamsburg and Jamestown Settlement

Williamsburg – Depart via motor coach with our tour guide for the charming town of Williamsburg. Our guide will provide interesting and informative narration during our ride about the historic Virginia peninsula and the Hampton Roads area. Upon arrival in Williamsburg, you will step back into the 18th century while strolling through the streets of Colonial Williamsburg. Our historical interpreter will guide us through the past and the events that helped shape America’s history a 1-1/2 hour leisurely walking tour through the restored area. Walking distance is approximately 4-5 blocks. Following our tour, enjoy free time to shop and browse in the many unique specialty shops in merchant’s square. High quality apparel, gifts, jewelry, unusual quilts, beautiful furniture and holiday decorations are but a few of the offerings found in this quaint picturesque shopping area. Enjoy lunch on your own in one of the colonial taverns or in Merchant Square. Our guide will point out all of the dining options as we pass through town.

Jamestown Settlement – We will spend the afternoon on Virginia’s historic peninsula touring Jamestown Settlement – established in 1607, this was the first permanent settlement in the New World. We will tour the re-created village of Jamestown which includes the live re-creations of a Powhatan Indian Village, a colonial fort, and three ships – Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery, which chronicles the nation’s 17th century beginnings in Virginia. Enjoy shopping in the beautiful gift shop, for unique items for home and garden as well as “Made in Virginia” items.

Wednesday – September 22nd, 2010 – Air & Space Center/Naval Base

Virginia Air and Space Center – Depart via motor coach with our guide to tour the Virginia Air and Space Center, the official visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center which is located in downtown Hampton, the birthplace of America’s space program.

The center features dozens of interactive exhibits, suspended aircraft, the space gallery, a premiere interactive aviation gallery that spans 100 years of flight and historical displays of Hampton Roads. Enjoy an exciting movie in the 300 seat IMAX Theater and shop for unique gifts in the gift shop.

Naval Station Norfolk Tour – Next we visit the Norfolk Naval Base, which is part of Naval Station Norfolk – the largest naval installation in the world. Our tour will take us past 14 piers and through the Naval Air Station. We will also drive by the historic homes built for the 1907 Jamestown Exposition on “Admiral’s Row” which now houses flag officers.

ALL VISITORS REQUIRE PHOTO ID FOR ENTRANCE INTO THE BASE

Lunch will be provided at one of the clubs on base.

Thursday – September 23, 2010 – Riding Tour, Nauticus, Battleship Wisconsin, Memorial Service, Victory Rover Harbor Cruise

Riding Norfolk Tour – Depart via motor coach with our guide to learn about Norfolk’s colorful 325 year history as we ride through the lovely historic district and restored areas. View stately homes along the Hague, old St. Paul’s Church, the Moses Myers House, the Chrysler Museum of Art, MacArthur Memorial, the historic Freemason District, Nauticus: The National Maritime Center, the Battleship Wisconsin, the restored waterfront area, as well as many other points of interest.

Nauticus – The National Maritime Center is a unique and thriving campus of visitor attractions that explores the economic, naval, and natural powers of the sea. Features here include a series of interactive exhibits, shows, and theaters with various films. Also, housed here is the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, one of ten museums officially

operated by the U.S. Navy. Highlights of naval battles and exhibits of detailed ship models, artwork, and memorabilia are showcased.

Battleship Wisconsin – A true highlight of your visit to Nauticus is the tour of the battleship Wisconsin. The main deck and sections of two upper decks are open for you to explore.

Memorial Service On The USS Wisconsin – A memorial service will be conducted to honor our shipmates that are reporting for “Final Muster” and are requesting permission to cross the brow for the last time.

Victory Rover Harbor Cruise – We will board the Victory Rover for a two hour cruise through the bustling Hampton Roads Harbor, one of the largest in the world. Enjoy fascinating and entertaining commentary along the way aboard this naval themed vessel. We will pass by the Norfolk Naval Base and you will be able to see whatever vessels are in port.

A Box Lunch is included.

Choices are:

Smoked Turkey Breast, Smoked Ham & Cheese, Roast Beef – All sandwiches include chips, pickle, cookie and bottled water. You will be able to choose on the cruise.

Friday, September 24, 2010 – Mariners Museums, Freemason Abbey, MacArthur Memorial, Doumar’s

Mariner’s Museum – One of the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world, housing a treasure trove of more than 35,000 items inspired by human experiences with the sea. The USS Monitor Exhibit opened in 2007. This 30 million dollar exhibit

includes artifacts, history and accounts of the career of the USS Monitor displayed in a 63,500 square foot space. You will be able to view the turret, engine, and several other artifacts that are currently being restored. You can browse the gift shop which features an extensive collection of maritime books and gifts.

Freemason Abby – You will enjoy a delicious lunch at Freemason Abbey, located in a 135 year old renovated church, Freemason Abbey Restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Norfolk. The building was built, and originally dedicated as a church in 1873.

Menu Selections:

SEAFOOD QUICHE

Oven baked with shrimp, scallops, and Swiss cheese. Served with Hollandaise sauce and with a fresh fruit accompaniment.

BBQ SANDWICH

SHE CRAB SOUP WITH ABBEY HOUSE SALAD

Out house specialty! A perfect blend of backfin crabmeat and cream, seasoned with a touch of sherry, paired with our house salad.

WALDORF CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH

Out homemade chicken salad with walnuts and apples, served on a Kaiser with lettuce, tomato, and kettle chips

FRIED FLOUNDER SANDWICH

Served with coleslaw and Abbey Fries

Lunch includes oven baked rolls, coffee, tea, or soft drink

MacArthur Memorial – After lunch we will visit the MacArthur Memorial for a glimpse into our country’s history. General MacArthur and his wife are entombed in the rotunda of the memorial.

Doumar’s – We will end our day at a stop at Doumar’s, home of the world’s first ice cream machine. Each of you will be treated to an ice cream cone before boarding the bus and heading back to the hotel.
