HOW CAN I GET MY LICENSE BACK?

If you are reading this brochure, it is likely that you or a loved one has been pulled over for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Getting an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle is an important step in regaining your license in Washington. This brochure will take you through all the necessary steps based on your offense and will assist you in getting back on the road quickly and legally.*

WHAT IS AN IGNITION INTERLOCK?

An ignition interlock device (IID) integrates breath alcohol testing with your vehicle's ignition system. Prior to starting your vehicle, you will need to submit a breath sample into the hand held portion of the device that tests for the presence of alcohol. If your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) is below Washington's ignition interlock limit (0.025), your vehicle will start. If alcohol is detected, your vehicle will not start until a passing sample has been provided.

IGNITION INTERLOCK DRIVER LICENSE

An Ignition Interlock Driver License (IIL) allows you to drive vehicles equipped with an IID while your regular license is suspended or revoked for a drug or alcohol-related offense. This license is issued by the WA Department of Licensing (DOL).

When to apply? You may apply for an IIL at any time, including after being arrested or after your revocation hearing. When you get an IIL you must maintain an IID in all of the vehicles you drive for the rest of your suspension. If you have a driver license from another state but are suspended in Washington, you can still apply for an IIL, even if you have never had a Washington driver license.

How to apply? ? Install an IID in all of the vehicles you drive. The IID

provider will provide proof of installation to the DOL.

? Provide proof of financial responsibility, such as a SR-22 certificate of automobile insurance

? Complete a Restricted Driver License Application,* form DR-500-001

? Submit your application, including a $100 application fee** to any DOL office or by mail to:

After the DOL receives your application: ? If approved, the DOL will mail or email your IIL when your

license suspension or revocation begins

? If the DOL does not receive all of the required documents for your application within 30 days, your application will be denied and you will be sent a letter to notify you of the denial

*The DOL will hold your application for 30 days in order for you to submit required documents. After 30 days, you forfeit any fees you've paid and you will have to start over again with a new application and application fee.

**Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted at select locations. By mail, send checks only and make payable to the "Department of Licensing."

When is an IID required? An IID is required before you can reinstate your driver license, after:

? A conviction for an alcohol or drug related DUI or Physical Control of a motor vehicle while under the influence

? Some convictions of reckless driving ? Some convictions of negligent driving

NOTE: The length of your IID requirement is determined by the court. A judge may add additional time to any of the examples above and repeat offenders must install an IID within five days of being released from custody.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

To apply for financial assistance, submit an Ignition Interlock Device Financial Assistance Application to the DOL, form DR-500-024. If you are approved, you will need to reapply every year. If you are denied, you may reapply in six months.

CALIBRATIONS

The state of Washington requires that all ignition interlock devices be calibrated every 60 days. A calibration consists of exchanging your current device for a newly calibrated one, ensuring accurate and consistent testing.
