Dear Stafford High School Parents:

HYDRATION/CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT

Dear Stafford High School Parents:

The purpose of this letter is to highlight important issues and provide you appropriate information for the Fall sports programs. The bottom of this letter must be signed and returned to the coaching staff prior to your son/daughter participating in any sport. Most of our teams will start practice on August 4th, however, football will begin July 31. There will be a mandatory parent/student meeting on Thursday, July 31st at 6:00pm in our auditorium to review our practice guidelines.

Many students show up for preseason practice physically unprepared. The demanding preseason work only makes it that much more difficult. For these reasons, it is imperative that all students spend time, now, getting used to the elements before the first day of practice.

Our coaching staff and athletic trainer will be vigilant in monitoring students for the signs/symptoms of heat related stress and give everyone opportunities to rest. Regular fluid breaks will be incorporated to reinforce/promote proper hydration. Students will be encouraged to “speak up” if they don’t feel right, so that accommodations can be made.

Here’s what you can do now to help keep your child safe:

- If not in a conditioning program start working out daily (15-20 min. then add 5 min each day) prior to the first day of practice to the point where a steady sweat is maintained.

- Hydrate (at least 20 oz water/Gatorade for every lb. lost) each night to replenish

- Encourage your child to “buddy up” with teammates and exercise in pairs.

- If your child shows signs of illness prior to practice inform us and evaluate his/her ability to practice in the heat.

- Any significant pre-existing medical condition not listed on the physical form MUST be provided to the coach/athletic trainer in writing ASAP.

The attachment on the reverse side of this letter has some valuable information from our Athletic Trainer regarding concussions and must be signed as well. All Athletic Trainers in Stafford County are fully certified and remain current through training, meetings and conferences. Please use them, as well as our outstanding coach’s, for additional information.

Sincerely,

Cessy Mallory
