Accounting on Micro Computers (ACNT 1311)

Spring 2013

Course

Credits Students who successfully complete this course will receive three hours of

college credit.

Prerequisites ACNT 1303 or ACCT 2301.

Course Goals Upon completion of prescribed work for this course, the student should be

able to:

1. Explain the functions and roles of integrated accounting software packages

in business.

2. Describe the differences between manual and computerized accounting

methods.

3. Set up and use and integrated accounting package on a microcomputer with

general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, payroll,

and job cost modules.

4. Build and maintain a chart of accounts.

5. Generate general ledger financial reports.

6. Key-enter sales, cash receipts, cash payments, and purchases on accounts.

7. Key-enter payroll records for individuals and companies.

Supplies You will need a USB disk (at least 500 MB), #2 pencil, and scantron forms.

Class

Attendance Attendance is necessary for a student to achieve the objectives in this class.

Therefore, students are expected to attend classes on a regular basis, and are expected to be punctual.

Students are responsible for all work, assignments, and material discussed in

class, whether the student is present or absent. Attending class does not

guarantee that the student will pass the course. If the overall grade average is

below 60, then the student will receive an “F” even if the student did not miss

any classes.

Pertinent College Withdrawal

Policies The last day to withdraw (W-Day) from a course is April 19, 2013. It is your responsibility to drop or withdraw from a course if you feel you cannot

pass the course or do the assignments. You must complete the forms in the

Registrar’s Office.

Under section 15.907 of the Texas Education Code, “an institution of

higher education” may not permit a student to drop more than six courses

including any course a transfer student has dropped at another institution

of higher education.

Academic Dishonesty

The WCJC catalog states: “Plagiarism and cheating refer to the use of

unauthorized books, notes, or otherwise securing help in a test; copying

tests, assignments, reports, or term papers....Misconduct may result in the

student’s being placed on disciplinary probation or suspension (dismissal)”.

Student Conduct

You are not allowed to record audio and/or video in this course unless Prior written approval is granted by the instructor.

Computer Room Rules

1. NO food, drinks, or tobacco products are allowed in the lab

2. Cell phones, pagers, radios, and other personal electronic devices must be turned on mute while in class and OFF during exams.

3. DO NOT install software or files of any kind on the hard drive of your lab computer unless directed to do so by your instructor.  This includes Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, games, etc.

4. DO NOT check email, play games or chat during class lecture/lab hours.  Use lab time for completing class work only.

5. DO NOT change the Windows environment or any of the software defaults unless directed to do so by your instructor.

6. DO NOT disconnect any hardware or change any equipment setting unless directed to do so by your instructor.

7. DO NOT modify the operating system or delete files on the computer in the lab unless directed to do so by your instructor.

8. DO NOT use WCJC computers for personal or business use.  The computers in the lab are for classroom instruction only.

9. DO NOT visit inappropriate websites while in class.

10. DO NOT connect any equipment not owned by WCJC (including personal laptop computers) to the network for any reason. 

11. DO NOT move any equipment unless directed to do so by your instructor.  When directed to move equipment, follow all safety guidelines.  If an injury occurs in the classroom, report it immediately to the instructor.  WCJC does not accept responsibility for injuries incurred while working in the computer classrooms.

12. WCJC stresses professional behavior standards:  DO NOT run, shout, throw objects, or otherwise engage in any behavior unacceptable in a professional work environment.

13. DO NOT save class work to the hard drive of your lab computer for future use.  Lab computers may be re-imaged at any time, and your work will be lost. 

Breaking the rules listed above may result in any of the following actions, depending on the severity and/or frequency of the violation:

Evaluation

Exams There will be about four tests (including the final exam). The tests will be

worth a total of 150 points and the final exam is worth 100 points.

Make-up exams will be given the week of April 29. You are responsible for telling your teacher which test you need and taking the make-up on the scheduled date. There is no make-up for the final exam. If you miss the final exam, you will receive a “0” for it since WCJC does not give an “I” (incomplete) unless it is approved by the Vice President of Academic Affairs. If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact your instructor.

Assignments Assignments are due on the assigned date (no exceptions). In addition to the

projects listed below, you will be responsible for the End of Chapter assignments and questions. Failure to turn in the assignments will results in -5 points; failure to turn in the questions will result in –2 points.

Final Course Grade You can receive a total of 550 points in the course. Points are obtained by

completing written exams at the end of each section and end-of-section practice

sets. Points are not given for the end of chapter assignments or questions; however, points are deducted if they are not completed.

TEXT: QuickBooks® 2012: A Complete Course, by Janet Horne

SUPPLIES: USB drive and 2 pocket file folders

PROCEDURES: Read each chapter before coming to class. Answer end-of-chapter questions as homework. Always add your name to the company name.

ASSIGNMENTS: One of the folders required will be used for the chapter tutorial and end-of-chapter assignments. Place the transmittal for each chapter on top of the printouts that are assembled in the order listed on the transmittal and submit when instructed. (Note: The transmittal sheets for all problems are found at the end of the chapter or the assignment.)

The second folder will be used for the practice sets. Place the transmittal for the practice set inside this folder, assemble the printouts in the order listed, and submit when instructed.

GRADING: Grades will be based on the successful completion of each assignment, the practice sets, and the examinations. Failure to complete the problems within the chapters or the end-of-chapter assignments will lower your grade by one letter. Practice sets (including the exam) are worth 100 points each. Written exams are 50 points each, and the final exam is 100 points.
