Life After Irma How to Clean Up after a Hurricane

I just went through my seventh hurricane and was fortunate once again to come through with no damage other than some downed trees even though we had sustained winds of 95mph for a couple of hours. Many of my friends and neighbors weren't so lucky and are now facing days or weeks of cleanup. Hurricanes are tricky beasts. You're usually not quite sure exactly where they're going to land until they're almost on top of you. There is, of course, that doom-filled cone of uncertainty that turns to the cone of probability once it gets so close to you, but there's rarely any degree of certainty until the storm is less than a couple of days away. Therefore, as is always the case, it's best to be prepared for the worst just in case it happens. Many of these rules apply to any type of advanced-warning weather event ? snow storms, blizzards, torrential rains, etc. but since I live in a hurricane zone, that's where my experience lies, so that's what I'll discuss.

Post Hurricane Survival ? Tips That Make

Your Life Easier

Prepare in Advance

Advance preparation is going to be one of your greatest post-hurricane survival tools because from the time the storm is a couple of days out until the time the lights are back on and delivery trucks have made it through to restock the shelves, you're going to be out of luck if you weren't already prepared. People seriously lose their minds when somebody on the Weather Channel whispers the "H" word. They jump in their cars and rush to Walmart, Target, and every other store out there to buy up all the camping supplies, gas stoves, propane, water, and canned foods to be found. They'll fill up their cars and buy 10 gas cans and fill them up, too. Then they'll go to the grocery store and snag all of the milk and bread and beer. And even the single-serve bottles of water. It doesn't matter that the after effects of the storm likely won't last more than a few days ? at least as far as supplies are concerned ? they stock up like Armageddon is upon us. For those of us who have lived through our fair share of them, we know that even if the storm is bad, it doesn't take the state long to get basic services back up and running. That doesn't mean that people don't completely freak out and make life harder for the rest of us. Hurricane season is the same every year. It runs from September-ish through November-ish. That means that we have plenty of advance notice that a hurricane may be coming our direction so that we can stock up on the essentials. Here's a list of essentials that you should always keep on hand:

? A couple of cases of water

? A few clean, empty milk jugs and juice containers ? Baggies ? First aid supplies ? Batteries ? A couple of camp lanterns ? Jar candles ? A grill or camp stove and the fuel to run it for a

week or so ? Cans of soup and other ready-to-eat items ? Medications ? Board games ? A clean cooler ? An air mattress ? you're going to be popular if your

friends lose power and you don't. Or, if you lose power, you at least have your own bed to take with you when you're hanging out at your friend's house ? A full tank of gas ? A plan in case something happens and you get separated for some reason from the kids or the rest of your family ? Hurricane shutters or plywood for your windows ? this stuff flies off the shelf once a storm is on the way ? Battery pack chargers for your phones and/or tablets so you have backup juice ? Junk food. Yes, I know it isn't healthy, but we're talking about a hurricane here, not a war or something else that would require tougher planning. A bag of chips will be nice with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. ? Pet food and enough water for your pets ? Toilet paper ? Baby wipes

Basically, pretend you're going camping for a weekend or a week and buy everything you'd need to do that

Just Because the Wind is Gone Doesn't Mean the Worst Has Happened

Wind isn't typically what kills people during a hurricane; water is. We have a saying, "Hide from the wind, run from the water." Seriously, flood waters and storm surges are no joke, and they often don't come until after the winds die down. For example, the St. Johns River didn't crest for a week after Hurricane Irma went through because of all of the runoff and rain. It rose around 5 feet and left many homes underwater that didn't flood the day of the hurricane. Since it's one of the only rivers in the world that runs north, it carried water from the harder-hit southern part of the state up to the east of Orlando and on up to Jacksonville.

Don't assume that just because the skies are blue and the wind is gone that it's over. 7
