Step 1: Choose Your File Format

For any of this to work we need shared file formats. Over the last few decades there have been many formats for each kind of file, and at any point in time there’s usually many formats to choose from. Why so many choices, and which one is best? For this project you will create a computational artifact which will give some sort of information regarding a file format of your choice.Step 1: Choose Your File FormatSome Suggestions: Just because you haven’t heard of a format before doesn’t mean that it isn’t interesting or important! But stick to one format and one format only.Image FormatsAudio FormatsVideo FormatsOther FormatsBMPJPEG 2000GIFTIFFPDFRAWWebPHEIFWAVAACOGGFLACALACWMAAIFFMP4OGGQuicktimeAVIFLVDOCXODTWant to find more?: This is just a short list of formats to get your research started. If you like you can skim this list of formats from Wikipedia to find more to check out. pick one!: Don’t spend more than 5-10 minutes deciding on a format. Pick one and then move on to Step 2.Step 2: Conduct Research on your File FormatYour goal in this computational artifact is to show why your file format is the best of the rest. But now you need to decide what you want your artifact to focus on. Some ideas are below:Overall Summary of Your Format: What type of file is it (audio / video / document / image etc.)? Where is (or was) this format normally used? Who created it? When? What else was around at the time? Is it still in use? Is it open source or do you need to pay for a license?Compression: Does it use compression? Lossy or lossless? What’s the average file size? On average how much (as a percent) does it compress a file?Advantages: What situations is your format good at? What advantages does it present over similar formats?Disadvantages: What situations is your format bad at? Are there other formats that perform better?Others: Have another idea that you want to use for your computational artifact here? Go for it!Practice Computational Artifact (File Formats)Even though the guidelines do not specify that you must include sources with your computational artifact, I want you to include them somewhere in your artifact (i.e. last slide in slide show, bottom of graphic organizer, etc.). I will only ask for (2) sources here. Use the tables below to keep track of your information; you can also add more if you like. My Format: _________________________________________________________________ Reference Name:Year Published:URL:Key InformationReference Name:Year Published:URL:Key InformationStep 3: Choose your media you’ll use to create the artifactAs long as your artifact is created with the use of a computer, you are good with whatever you decide to you. Advise: go with something that either you (a) already know how to use/create) or (b) something that is easy to learn. Ideas include:Graphic Organizer: Google Drawing, Google Slide, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, various web tools (Powtoon, Prezi, Piktochart), etc.Webpage: Google, Weebly, , etc.Video: Flipgrid, Screencast-o-matic, etc.Audio: suggested you don’t just do this by itself; add audio with any of the above for something graphical to look atStep 4: Make sure your computational artifact communicates the required itemsClearly states what file format your artifact is describing (i.e. JPG). Maybe add a title near the top?Illustrates, represents, or explains the file formats intended purpose, function, or effectClearly names other “competitor” file formats. Maybe do a comparison with other formats? You make it clear why your file format is way better than the others!List your (2) sources you used (if there is more than list those too)Remember: this artifact is not about how outstanding it looks from a graphic design perspective. This is about you answering the questions and that you explain the process! Don’t feel like you have to be a graphic designer to do this artifact. What you need to be able to do is show you understand your file format. Good luck! ................
