FOLSOM CORDOVA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTFolsom High School 2018-2019COURSE EXPECTATIONSCOURSE:Honors Principles of Engineering (POE)INSTRUCTOR:Mrs. Pam GoldmanPHONE:(916) 294-2400 x415335EMAIL:pgoldman@COURSE DESCRIPTION: Principles of Engineering is designed by Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to build an interest in engineering as a career goal and provide hands-on instruction in a variety of related technologies. Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentationEQUAL OPPORTUNITY: Folsom High School is committed to equal opportunity for all individuals. Activities shall be free from discrimination based on gender, race, color, religion, national origin, ethnic group, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability or any other unlawful consideration.METHOD OF EVALUATION: I use a weighted grading system, which reports a student’s cumulative semester progress. I expect ALL students to participate and complete all assigned class work. Part of your grade based on your participation – individually and as a group member. You will find that being an active participant in class will increase your understanding and knowledge of the material - and you will have more fun!Since this is a hands-on class, classroom projects, participation and homework are the MAJOR parts of your grade. It is important to keep a quality notebook as part of your participation grade. The students may also be required to attend educational field trips as part of their grade. Many projects must be done during class, don’t waste time! Occasionally, additional project work must be done outside of normal class hours.Weighted Grading Structure by SemesterGrading Percentage Distribution PercentageGrade90% – 100%A89.5% -89.9%A-80% – 89.4%B79.5%-79.9%B-70% - 79%C69.5%-69.9%C-60% - 69%D59.5%-59.9%D-Below 59.5%FRequired Task% of GradeHomework, Projects, In-Class assignments50%Tests & Quizzes25%Teamwork10%Final Exam15%The final exam will be based on the same material presented during the semester. It will be cumulative. POWERSCHOOL: Assignments will be graded and posted in here as teacher time permits. Parents should check there for the most up-to-date grade for their student. If a score is listed has ‘missed’, your student didn’t do that assignment. If a score for an assignment is blank, that assignment has not been graded and/or recorded yet. For assignment details, please see the Google Classroom for the student. Students may need to login to the PLTW Courses site to enable access to the proprietary material. Potentially, not all assignments will be calculated into a student’s grade or appear in Powerschool. MAKE-UPS: Per FCUSD policy, you have 2 school days to make up assignments missed following an absence. For longer absences, students are given same number of days to make up classwork as the days in their excused absence days. Long-term assignments such as projects are due on the day specified, regardless of absences between the date assigned and the date due. Work from an unexcused absence cannot be made up. Students may turn in late work in the same quarter that it was due. Each late assignment will lose 20% automatically. NO late work will be accepted for a prior quarter. If you have an excused absence from class, YOU, THE STUDENT, are responsible for collecting and completing all missed assignments (see Google Classroom). If you miss a test or quiz, you will take the test on the equivalent day extended by your absence (before or after school at teacher discretion) or the next PAWS day. If you are late making up a test or quiz, you will lose 20%. All missed tests must be made up before the next test or a 0 grade for the missed test will be assigned. ATTENDANCE/TARDIES: Projects and field trips are an important part of your grade and efforts should be made to attend. Due to the nature of the class, absences may have a large impact on a student’s participation grade (and other areas if the associated work is not done).Being tardy disrupts class learning and causes student to miss important instructions and class work time. Therefore, students are expected to be in their seat when the bell rings. After the first two times a student is late, they will be disciplined according to the PAWSport policy. EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit opportunities may be given during the semester in the various weighted grade categories. MATERIALS: Students are expected to come to class each day with necessary materials. If the student has difficulty getting these materials at this time, please have the student talk to me and arrangements will be made to supply the student for the start of the year. ? Engineering Notebook – quadrille grid, bound (similar to Office Depot Item #323685). Spiral bound are NOT recommended. Students should NOT remove any pages of their notebook during the year.? Binder paper, graph paper, and pencils? Calculator capable of doing roots and basic trigonometric functions DONATIONS: State law does not allow school districts to charge fees to students for educational activities; many of our programs rely on financial contributions from participating families. Please know that a donation is not required to participate, and families that choose to contribute may do so at any amount. A suggested donation of $20 can help sustain the PLTW projects. TEXTBOOK/MATERIALS RESPONSIBILITY: You are responsible for your assigned computer and other equipment. You will be charged for any damage or vandalism of your computer, textbook or other equipment. Let the teacher know if a computer is damaged when you arrive.ACADEMIC DISHONESTY/PLAGIARISM: In order to encourage students to follow our Academic Honesty Policy (please refer to the PAWSport), Folsom High School is implementing , an originality-checking software program.
