I. EXHIBITIONS

Kinsale Old Mill Craft Exhibition

August 3rd to 14th Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 6pm

‘Form Function Adorn’

How we plan to use a crafted object changes how we see it. With pieces we expect to use: cups, bowls, plates and furniture; function comes ahead of form. A cup may be beautiful but if the balance of the handle is off, we may reject the piece. This is beauty in the sense that Immanuel Kant described – beauty derived from each part being perfectly formed for its object and task. Craft that is about pure form, transcends this judgment. Then what matters is line, shape, materiality, and the relationships between all three. Finally, when it comes to pieces we plan to wear, to adorn ourselves, a different set of aesthetics come into play, and we value a piece’s worth against how well it will suit our own persons. This exhibition takes some of the best of Cork Craft, and looks at it from the various perspectives of form, function and adorn.

Fota House Exhibition

August 7th – 21st Daily 10am to 5pm

‘Contemporary Legacy’

The craft of the past has slipped so seamlessly into our heritage, that we regard much of it as fashion and evidence of a series of overarching tastes: the fashion for classical cornicing, Queen Anne Legs, Chinoiserie, Regency... Can a contemporary fashion be identified in craft? Or is that something for the heavy handed brushstroke of history to apply? Setting crafted objects – from the exquisitely conceived, to the perfectly formed, to the quirky and fun – into the Georgian drama of Fota House, this exhibition opens the question of a contemporary crafted legacy for tomorrow.

Wandesford Quay, Cork City

August 1st to 8th Daily 10am - 6pm

Eoin Turner: ‘Sculpture & Objet d’Art’

This exhibition has given Eoin Turner the opportunity to showcase his extensive artistic range - from majestic stand alone glass sculpture to delicate cast glass panels. Eoin’s commissioned art works show a startling combination of the classic and the sophisticated: They represent his distinctive connection with nature as well as his raw, ever-evolving talent.

Eoin’s design and technological skills offer a striking fusion of practicality and creativity that have seen him expand his repertoire over the years. He has gone from working with glass for architectural application to creating bespoke installations for his domestic, corporate and marine clientele. Using advances in metal plating, he has been able to incorporate larger areas of precious metal into architectural panels, making the previously impossible possible, with breath-taking results. These unique pieces have catapulted him into the international spotlight.

Each individual piece echoes Eoin’s earlier painting and sculptural work. The cast glass and formed metal combine to create a subtle and at the same time rugged, defined form. The hallmark of Eoin’s work continues to be his creative blend of luxurious colour tempered with precious detail which is utterly contemporary yet retaining a classical sophistication.

Wandesford Quay, Cork City

August 16th to 30th Daily 10am - 6pm

‘Narrative Thread’

Textiles are literally the Cinderella of craft. From seemingly humble beginnings, stitch on stitch, they start at the level of the domestic, and yet many do go to the ball. The nature of crafting thread and fabric provides an infinitely inexhaustible range of expression, and the processes of making: stitching, weaving, layering, texturing, dying; create a steadily building narrative of time spent in the creation of a completed idea. We may use some of these pieces to give us clothing and warmth but, as this exhibition demonstrates, textiles can also transcend the utilitarian, becoming fantasy pieces, with fantastic forms to savour, where we can lose ourselves in the story of their stitches.

Julian Smith Ceramics Exhibition

Julian Fullerton Smith has been working with clay for well over 20 years.  He established his own studio therein Kinsale  in 1996.

Julian has established himself as one of Ireland's foremost Raku artists. Raku is a technique originating in Japan in the sixteenth century, in which work is rapidly fired and removed from the kiln when glowing red-hot. The piece is then placed in a container with combustible materials creating striking colours using metallic oxides. The charm of Raku lies in its use of primitive materials which nevertheless can produce highly sophisticated results.
