Health Information Management

The HIM Department worked on a Lean initiative to reduce the average number of pending delinquent records. Through this process many Kaizens were identified which enhanced the completion rate. In particular this initiative reduced the pediatric resident delinquency rate significantly. (Refer to graph)

QUALITY AND SAFETY ? LifeWings

LifeWings began helping hospitals improve patient safety since 1999 as Crew Training International, Inc. LifeWings was introduced to Miami Children's Hospital in August 2009 and provided 5 classes on improving patient safety in the OR. All OR staff, surgeons, ancillary staff and anesthesiologists were required to attend a 5 hour training session. There was 100% attendance from staff, 33% attendance from surgeons and 100% from the anesthesiologists. Part of the training included a 3 day Hardwired Safety Tool Workshop. A committee deriving from that training created tools (Checklist) that would be used for all of surgical services. This included Pre Operative Nursing Protocol, Room Set-Up. As a result these participants began updating their safety checklist and began utilizing a more active "Time-Out" process and many other important tools. Miami Children's Hospital now has their own training team that was trained in Memphis. This allows our hospital to host future "train the trainers" workshops.
