Message from your Exalted Ruler...
Greetings to all Lodge #1784 members!
I can't believe it's March 1st. Where did the year go? This will be my last Antlergram letter as ER. I want to take this opportunity to thank the officers who worked so hard to make this year a great one, the committee chairs and volunteers who worked so hard to make this Lodge one of the best and all the great members of our Lodge who put their faith in our officers and supported the Lodge in all the events.
The election of officers for the 2017-2018 lodge year was held at the February 28th Lodge Meeting. Congratulations to Rex Clayton, our next ER, and his entire suite of officers. I know they will continue to move us forward to the next level.
On January 29th we had an afternoon with Frank Sinatra to benefit the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. It was a huge success. On February 5th we had a great crowd for the Super Bowl Bingo and the Super Bowl Party. I want to thank the Bingo committee for the great job they did on Super Bowl Bingo. Also, thanks to Paul Champlin, his kitchen crew and volunteers for a job well done for these and many other events over the past year.
Coming up in March we have Comedy Night on the 11th to benefit the Elks National Foundation. On March 16th we will celebrate the Irish Person of the Year. March 18th we will have the Installation of Officers. If you plan to attend the dinner, please pick up your ticket in the Secretary's office. There is limited seating. The tickets are free, but we are asking for a $10.00 donation to the Ray Dobratz Fund. I would like to congratulate Kevin Minckler as Elk of the Month. If you don't know Kevin, he is the member who flies his plane over our Veterans' BBQ in June. Kevin has been doing this for the last 3 years at his own expense. Thank you Kevin and we're hoping for a return visit in June.
One of my final duties as ER is to select Elk of the Year and Citizen of the Year. This was one of the hardest things I had to do all year. There were so many good people to choose from. I am proud to announce Bill Kobrock as our Elk of the Year for 2017-18. Bill has donated a lot of his time and materials over the years. He donated the two T.V.s in the Members' Bar, wired up all the T.V.s in the Main Hall, connected and maintains our security system, and more. Thanks Bill for all you do.
I am also proud to announce our Citizen of the Year, Jack Barnhart. Jack served as an officer for many years and for the past few years he has served as our ENF Chairperson. He started our Buck-A-Book fundraiser which increases our ENF donations. Under Jack's chairmanship, our Lodge has won many awards from the State and Grand Lodge, making us eligible for many grants. Thank you, Jack, for all your time and hard work.
In closing, I want to take a minute to thank Carol and Natalie for all their help over the past year. Also, thanks to all the volunteers who make this Lodge so great. ER Rick

Veterans Corner - March
100 Years of Helping of Military Service Veterans
The Elks had a modest beginning in 1868 as a social club for minstrel show performers, called the "Jolly Corks".
(later changed to Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks)
In 1917 the World was at War. The order of Elks was only 49 years old when we began our support of Military Service Veterans. We raised money and our first consideration was to the sick and wounded on the battlefields of France. We equipped the first two field hospitals to reach France.
In 1918, to accommodate the maimed and wounded, the Elks built a 700-bed Reconstruction Hospital in Boston and gave it to the Government. This was the forerunner of the VA Medical Centers we have today.
Our next Westbrook Elk Lodge #1784 VA Program will be held on Saturday March 18. We are limiting the reservations to 100. The Program is free but reservations are needed to manage seating of our meal. First Company Governor's Foot Guard will provide entertainment. Our Program kicks off at Noon. Contact Phil Sengle no later than March 6 to reserve seating at psengle@ or 860-552-4540.
Celebrate our Elks 100 Years of Helping Military Service Veterans all Year long.

Elks National Foundation
Well, it is that time of the year again when the lodge sends out their annual dues letters. As you will see on the letter there is a selection to add additional monies as a donation to the Elks National Foundation (ENF). I sincerely hope that you will seriously consider a generous donation so that our Lodge can again meet its goals of the Per Capita target set by the Grand Exalted Ruler for 2017/2018. By reaching this goal we can apply for many grants that allow our lodge to continue the great charity work we do. We use this money to help veterans, youth, and other community organizations such as the Shoreline Soup Kitchen in the 9 towns we support here on the shoreline. Please help us continue to achieve the Elks motto of Elks Care/Elks Share.
Fraternally Yours, Jack Barnhart ENF Chairman.

Free Yoga Classes on the Beach
Local yoga instructor Renee LaMark Muir has partnered with the Westbrook Elks Lodge to offer yoga classes on the lawn overlooking the beach this summer. Yoga classes will be held on Tuesdays, from 8:30 to 9:45 am, beginning on June 6 to July 18, 2017 (no class on July 4). Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or beach towel.
The yoga classes are free, but donations will be accepted for Forgotten Felines of Connecticut, which is a private, all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless cats and kittens. All money collected will be donated: 75 percent to Forgotten Felines of Connecticut and 25 percent to the Westbrook Elks.
Classes have been designed for all levels and no yoga experience is necessary. Modifications will be offered for postures and any physical conditions or limitations. Each class will include a centering with breath technique and warm up movements followed by a series sequenced postures and will end with guided relaxation. Yoga helps develop balance, strength, coordination and flexibility in the body and enhances cardiovascular health, as well creates a sense of physical and mental confidence, calmness, and overall well-being.
Renee LaMark Muir is a certified yoga instructor and has been teaching yoga in the shoreline area for 17 years. She currently teaches yoga classes and workshops at Blue Moon Yoga in Deep River and Pradipika in Clinton. She enjoys working with all students from those new to yoga to advanced practitioners.
