What are the Characteristics of Living Things

What are the Characteristics of Living Things?

Materials: hand lens, unknown objects (dry), same unknown objects in water, beans, beans soaked in water, pencil, petri dish, fish bowl, wet paper towel, covered class beaker

Procedure:

1. Examine the dry unknown object. Record observations.

2. Examine the dry beans. Record observations.

3. In step 7, you will observe the same kind of unknown object after it has been soaked in water. Write a prediction describing what you expect to see.

4. In step 8, you will observe the same kind of beans after they have been soaked in water. Write a prediction describing what you expect to see.

5. Take the unknown objects to the front of the room and deposit them in the large class fish bowl of water.

6. Wrap your seeds in wet paper towel and place them in the large, covered beaker in layers.

7. Examine the unknown objects that have been soaking in water for a period of time. Record your observations. Wash your hands when you have finished.

8. Examine the beans that have been soaking in water for a period of time. Record your observations.

9. Complete the Analysis and Conclusion.

Record at least 5 observations for the dry unknown objects.
