a. After Cain was banished from God for killing his brother, he joined with a snake and Grendel was created.

a. All of the soldiers attack Grendel, but it is useless. He kills everyone that tries to attack him.

9) Why doesn’t Grendel attack Hrothgar?

a. Queen Wealhtheow throws a burning brand at Grendel, but it misses and falls to the floor beside Hrothgar. The light blazes against his armor and this causes Grendel to stop.

10) How did Beowulf find out about the story of Heorot Hall?

a. Hrothgar’s poets have taken the story of Grendel wherever they go. Beowulf hears them retelling the story when they visit the Geats.

11) How does Beowulf react when he hears the story?

a. He selects the bravest soldiers and sets sail for Hrothgar’s kingdom.

12) What advice does the coastguard give to Beowulf when he arrives in the land of the Danes? How does Beowulf respond?

a. The coastguard tells Beowulf to go home. He thanks the coastguard for his advice, but says he’s going to stay.

13) Why does Unferth think that Beowulf is wicked?

a. Beowulf is eating an apple from a grove the Unferth believes is cursed by a witch.

14) Why does Queen Wealhtheow think Beowulf is strong?

a. Beowulf admits his weaknesses and by admitting them has become stronger.

15) Who is Breca?

a. A friend of Beowulf’s.

16) What happens between Beowulf and Breca?

a. Breca and Beowulf made a dare to see who could swim in the ocean the longest. A storm hits and Beowulf has to fight nine sea monsters. Breca, who is the better swimmer, was swept to Norway by the current.

17) Why doesn’t Beowulf want to use a sword when he fights Grendel?

a. He knows that weapons haven’t worked before and says that his hands are weapon enough.
