I'm Passionate About Ag- Rachelle Smith

When looking at possible career paths to take when completing my high school journey there were many that interested me. Agriculture was the one that kept popping up as the most rewarding and inviting path to follow, as it is close to my heart, and I see many opportunities and growth for it in the near future.

My whole life, for as long as I can remember has been built around, and focused on agriculture. I come from a small community where farming runs through our blood like water through a river. My family has been operating a family farm for over 100 years now and my child hood memories are all of me riding in the combine with my grandfather, father and brothers. Their passion has been passed on to me through many years helping in the field. Over the recent years I have found a new respect for farmers, and the dedication they show towards their career. Farmers operate so many aspects of a business, from working in the fields, on machinery, to keeping books, marketing, and learning to utilize all the new technology that is continuously being presented to the farmers. Farmers don't have one job, they have numerous jobs that they always are able to pull off, even in busy seasons like seeding and harvest. Their ability to keep their businesses afloat inspires me and makes me excited to work by their side, helping and learning from them.

These farmers dedicate their lives to this, and it is not just a 9-5 job, but a life style they sacrifice sleep and spare time for. Agriculture is what keeps small town communities alive, as there is always the opportunity to get involved in the community and this is another major influence on my decision to pursue a job in agriculture. I love small towns and I see working with the citizens in small town beneficial to them, as it will keep their businesses thriving and growing.

I would like to gain experience through summer jobs during my time in university, before beginning a career. After I have finished my degree in university I hope to enter into a job where I will be working alongside these hardworking men and women, helping to make their lives easier. I decided on this career path because I see agriculture as an industry that is ever growing and full of potential for years to come. There is excitement behind the title of agriculture, as there are always advancements in technologies, and practices, making the future full of endless opportunities to grow into and help form. Unlike many other jobs, agriculture is not a fad that will lose popularity over time, it has been growing stronger every year, and will continue to do so.

In the future I see agriculture growing even bigger, there is more young people interested in pursuing agriculture than there ever has been before. With heightened interest in these recent years I know that the future for agriculture will be very prosperous. When finished university I would want to promote agriculture to younger kids, showing the positive sides that the industry has on you and society. Agriculture is a thankless career path for farmers, and I would like to promote everything that they do for society. I have seen the care, hard work and sweat that goes into owning and running a farm, and I cannot wait to be a part of something as big, and inviting as agriculture.
