 Defining Moment Speech (EA #1 – Unit 2)SPEECH DUE DATE: Transcript of Speech & Hard Copy of PPT due – 10/9Presentations 10/9 – 10/11ASSIGNMENT: Write and deliver a speech incorporating both narrative techniques and CEI format about a defining moment in your life so far. Throughout this unit you will study narratives in multiple genres, and you will explore a variety of perspectives and experiences. You will:Identify a moment in your life that has been significant (defining). Conduct research to answer the research question: How can a significant moment define someone?Answer the research question in one sentence (this is your thesis)Write the speech to include your defining moment and your research as support for your answerUtilize narrative techniques in your speech to communicate with audienceDeliver your speech to the classPURPOSE:Present information and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically.Make purposeful use of a digital visual aid (PPT) to enhance your audience’s understanding of your informationREQUIREMENTS:Speech TranscriptYou will use the format provided to turn in a TYPED transcript of your speech. The link to the format is also available on the blog. Your speech must contain a Thesis, AT LEAST TWO outlined CEI paragraphs, and a concluding sentence.The transcript will be your speech typed in its entirety. Speech/Presentation:No less than 2 minutes and no more than 4 minutes (-be sure to practice with a timer!)Thesis, 2 claims with supporting evidenceAt least ONE documented source found through database research (Cobb Digital Library/Mackinvia). Research should be cited on a references page (APA format) that will be submitted with your transcriptYou must have a visual (Powerpoint) to accompany your speech Visual should have few if any words.Visual should be used for the emphasis of an idea- not the outline of a speech.SUGGESTED STEPS:Determine your defining moment and answer the research question. This will be your thesis. Brainstorm ideas and be as thorough as possible.Start researchBegin writing your speech (Which should have C-E-I format)Use narrative techniques when discussing your personal defining moment.Use narrative techniques to write your hook.Write your speech transcript keeping in mind the C-E-I format.You can use your transcript during your speech presentation as long as you aren’t simply readingCreate your visual aid. It must contain pictures and/or graphics. Words should be minimal, if any. It is a tool to support your speech.Print off a copy of your visual aid and outline to turn in on 10/9 (Whether you present that day or not)DAY OF SPEECHYou must be dressed professionally You will be assigned a day to present between 10/9-10/11 (If you are absent, a zero will go in the gradebook until you make it up. You will be expected to make it up the next time you are in class. Otherwise, it is late).On days you are not presenting, you will be assigned to evaluate other presenters.
