tha Reform chute," for wicb "some Doniphan County men'' were the authority, is badly spoiled,

as far as Bridges is concerned. He speaks for himself, and has spoken. He does not depend

upon us for bis conduct and sentiments, nor we

upon bim. As for "Sol. Miller," he is of age, and

the CAi'almost of age, and both propose to speak

their sentiments in plain English, on all occa-

sions. It is quite likely that we shall be labor-

ing for tbe true interests of the Republican party,

when some of those who are so eager to class us as

wavering, shall be found weak in tbu knees, and

trimming and shystcriug. Wait and see.

Tinkering. There is danger that tbe Republicans in the Legislature, in trying to ont-refothe "Reformers," will make more blunders than otherwise. They seem to be bent npon abolishing tbe office of Comity Superintendent of Public Instruction ; but somo one calls their attention iu the fact tbat tho dfllce is provided for by the Cocrtitutiou, and that nothing short of a Constitutional amendment can abolish it.

Then, they want to amend the Constitution so as to provide for biennial sessions of the Legislat lire, liy all means. Such an ameiidnieut, of itself, woulflclog tbe wheels of the entire Stato Gov-

ernment If biennial sessions were adopted,

ithoreareat least four or five, other provisions of tbe Constitution that would necessarily have to be chauged,to make them of any force; and as

no more than three amendments can be submit-

ted at one time, au amendment providing for biennial sessions would be impracticable. One

section of the Constitution says that no appropriation shall bo for a longer period than ouo year,

ami thero would be no ineaus of paying expenses every second year. The only way to amend

the Coustitution without patching or bungling

it, is by means of a Constitutional Convention; and the sooner tbat is provided for, tho better. This tinkering tbe Constitution will cost more,

in tbe end, than a Convention would, and then

tbe work is poorly done.

Hahit.r'8 Magazine for February, 1875. Tbe readers of Harper', Magazine tiill be im-

pressed with the novelty and freshness, as well

as with the importance of tbe topics treated in

the February Nnmber of that popular Monthly.

Containing over eighty illnstratiuns.iii the. vari-

ety of its reading matter it is to a corresponding

degree rich and extensive.

This Number contain fonrdistjnctivelyAmeri-ca- n

articles, three of which are profnsely illnstra-te- d.

George Alfred Townsend gives a glowing

but accurate description of "New Washington,"

showing what changes have lieen wrought in

tbe national capital by tbu improvements made

since tbe war; this description being accompa-

nied by unnierous illustration. L. J. Du Pre, of

the Memphii Appeal, under tho title of "Wonders

of the Lowlands," contributes an entertaining

illustrated articles on tbo Mound-Builde-

of tbe

Mississippi Valley. John Uigelow, from the

letters of Do Witt Clinton to Colonel Post, gathers together some very curions materi

als, illustrating the acrimony of partisan politics half a century ago. But the most important of the articles dealing especially with American

topics, is the fourth paper of the Centennial

series, continuing the review of Mechanical pro-

gress during the ccntnry now closing. This pa-

per, which in profusely illustrated, deals with

tbeinventions connected with domestic machine-

ry, arms, and ordnance, the telegraph aud oth-

er applications of electricity, es

and

s,

gas and ice manufacture, iniuiug

machinery, sugar-makin-

gluts aud paper mak-

ing, artificial limbs, etc. Tbe subject of printiug

and tbo process involved in

g

is re-

served for fuller treatment iu the March Num-

ber.

In this. Number .is commenced an interesting seriecof papers, by James Partoii, richly illus-

trated, ou Car'icatnrc, the first article dealing with "Caricature among the Ancients."

George M. Towle contributes a very valuable and instructive paper on tbo French Institute and academies, illustrated with a picture of the Institute building, and 'portraits of leading aca demiciaus.

A very comprehensive article on the field and work of Christian Missions, illustrated by four carefully prepared maps, is contributed by Lyman

Abbott.

One of the most striking features of this Number is the commencement of a new serial story by Miss Thackeray, entitled "Miut Angel," and

based ou the romance of Angelica Kauffmau's

life. Iu order to include this story, eight pages

have been added to this Number of the Magazine

Moncure C. Conway contributes a graphic sketch of Professor Fancelt, which is illustrated by beautiful portraits of the professor aud his

wife.

Mr. Mason's serial story, "Rape of the Gamp," a vigorous and intensely interesting novel, iscon-tinne-

with illustrations by Fredericks. Two

excellent short stories ale given by Kllis Gray and Knto Putnam Osgood.

The number opens with a Wautiful poem by

Will Wallace Harney, entitled "The Angel of the

Twilight," with uu illustration by Sol Kytinge.

Other poems are contributed by Elizabeth Stod-

dard, Harriet Prcscott Spoffbrd, ami Anna C.

Brackett.

Men wrrn Backbone Wanted. This is the time, when rebellion exists in several of tho States, and rebels are rampant in Congress, that the Republican party needs its men of backbone in Congress. Those good fellows, who never committed a sin, because they had not the spunk to do it, amount to about as much, in snch emergencies, as a cold buckwheat cake. But the

is, that the rigidly pure portion of the party, uniting their efforts with those of the Democrats, have managed to kill off every Republican of ability and nerve, as fast as tboir terms have expired. They have defeated Butler, and Nye, aud Chaudlcr; have done their utmost to defeat Carpenter, aud have long been making their assaults upon Logau. They are getting, in tLeir places, either Democrats who will cast their lot with the rebel element, or whose lot it of no consequence to anybody.

But perhaps this disease broke out just at the right time. By placing the Democracy ill power now, nud giving them a chance to show their trne colors, the country will become sick enough of them to return to Republicanism before tbe next Presidential election.

l"S? In Harper Il'ctll), tho great distinguish-

ing feature is the cartoons of Thomas Nast, which

have never been equaled. Each niiinbcrcoutains

from one to three of thrm, and each one is better

than a stump speech. The Louisiana difficulty

is a fertile subjet for him, and bo is improving it.

One cartoon of his mi the subject, contains truth

enough to outweigh the resolutions of every

Democratic Legislature in tbe United States.

When Nast gets a man's countenance (especially

his nose) iu a caricature once, he holds it forever

afterwards, aud whenever be represents that

the reader at once recognizes him.

called, bavo passed the Kansas House of Representatives by a large majority, and will pass the Senate. Doniphan Conuty stands as follows, through her members: Bridges will vole for them. I was positive that the hard case of "Chicken Street,"

I was bad enough, but I bad never stolen a horse. How.

was taking tbe horse, waa a regular station for horse-thiev-

in running their stolen property out of the coun-

two other prisoners one night succeeded in making our

escape. I lost no time la gtttlngontofthat country, and

a place on board a ship. 1 was in a strange city, without

"I went on board with him, and we were soon on our

fields of the Pacific Ocean. I need not consume time with

the particular of the voyage. Suffice it to say. that I had

a hard time of it. Common hands on whalers, in those

days more than at present, fared worse than slaves on a

plantation. But I was used to bciug knocked around, all

my life, and I soon got so that I did not mind it. Oue day

the vessel was struck by the severest squall I have ever
