“All Summer In a Day”

Persuasive Writing Activity

Directions: Select one of the prompts below. Craft a multi-paragraph response. Use the steps in the writing process.

#1 You are Margot. You remember what it is like to live where the sun shines. You are miserable on Venus and would like to return to Earth. Write a letter to your parents persuading them to return to Earth. Explain the benefits to you and your siblings, even though your parents won’t make as much money.

#2 You are Margot. You are angry with your peers for locking you in the closet during the two hours of “summer.” You believe your peers should face consequences for their actions. Write a letter to the principal of your school persuading him/her to punish your classmates. Explain how it felt to be locked in the closet and to miss “summer.”

#3 You are part of the public relations department for Venus, Inc., the company responsible for colonizing Venus. Write a letter to potential colonists persuading them to move to Venus. Focus on the positive aspects of the planet (i.e. no drought, lush jungle, etc.).

#4 You are Margot’s mother or father. You understand her desire to return to Earth but remaining on Venus for another three years will be financially beneficial for the family.
