From north to south it includes the communities of Bucklands Beach, Half Moon Bay, Mellons Bay, Farm Cove, Howick, Highland Park, Sunnyhills and Pakuranga (including Pakuranga Heights). Pakuranga was first contested at the 1963 general election when it was won by future Labour Deputy Prime Minister, Bob Tizard. With the introduction of MMP in 1996, the seat was expanded to absorb most of the neighbouring seat of Howick. Its boundaries have remained largely unchanged since. The boundaries of the Pakuranga electorate were last adjusted in the 2007 redistribution. Initially the Representation Commission had proposed substantial changes but, after hearing objections, mainly about Pakuranga, Manukau East, and Manurewa, the electorate reverted to almost the same boundaries as it had before the review. There have been no changes for the 2020 election. Aside from the period when Pakuranga was represented by Bob Tizard (1963 to 1972) the electorate has been primarily represented by MPs from the National Party. The main exception occurred between 1984 and 1987 when it was held by Social Credit’s Neil Morrison. The longest-serving MP for Pakuranga is Maurice Williamson (National) who represented the electorate for 30 years from 1987 until 2017. The Pakuranga electorate is currently held by Simeon Brown (National), who has held the seat since 2017.At the 2018 Census the Pakuranga electorate was predominantly European (56.2%) and Asian (37.4%), with the shares of those identifying as Maori (6.6%), or Pacific Peoples (5.2%), far lower than the New Zealand average. Almost half (48.8%) of the population was born overseas – the fifth-highest share among general electorates, and nearly double the New Zealand average (27.4%). Over half (56.6%) of those over 15 were married, while one-third (32.6%) of women over 15 had had two children – the third-highest, and highest, shares across New Zealand. Of households who rented, almost one-third (30.4%) paid rent between $500 and $599 per week in 2018, the highest share in New Zealand. The share of those engaged in the wholesale trade industry (8.3%) was the second-highest in New Zealand. The most prevalent industries of those employed was manufacturing (11.7%), the professional, scientific and technical services sectors (11.5%), retail trade (9.5%), and construction (9.3%).Election resultsElection results (2017)The winning candidate in the 2017 election, Simeon Brown (National Party), captured a majority (64.9%) of the 34,916 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Pakuranga electorate. The seat was previously won in 2014 by Maurice Williamson (National Party) with a margin of 12,867. The National Party also captured a majority (61.9%) of the party votes in Pakuranga up 1.4 percentage points on its party vote share in 2014. Turnout (total votes cast as a proportion of enrolled electors) in 2017 was 77.1%.2017 General election results – electorate candidate votesPakurangaCandidateValid VotesShare (%)BROWN, Simeon (NAT)22,66364.91KIRKER, Barry (LAB)7,77722.27KELLY, Suzanne (NZF)2,0395.84HUNT, Guy (GP)2,0185.78STODDART-SMITH, Carrie (MAOR)4191.2Total Valid Votes34,916100Total Votes Cast35,422101.45Winning Candidate: BROWN, Simeon - margin 14886For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.2014 General election results – electorate candidate votesPakurangaCandidateValid VotesShare (%)WILLIAMSON, Maurice (NAT)20,38861.03KIRKER, Barry (LAB)7,52122.52CRAIG, Andrew (CNSP)3,46510.37WHYTE, Jamie (ACT)2,0306.08Total Valid Votes33,404100Total Votes Cast34,963104.67Winning Candidate: WILLIAMSON, Maurice - margin 12867For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.2011 General election results – electorate candidate votesPakurangaCandidateValid VotesShare (%)WILLIAMSON, Maurice (NAT)20,69465.86KAUSHAL, Sunny (LAB)6,84821.79GEDGE, Lance (CNSP)1,6345.2MULFORD, Helen Jane (NZF)1,4304.55SIMMONS, Chris (ACT)8162.6Total Valid Votes31,422100Total Votes Cast32,995105.01Winning Candidate: WILLIAMSON, Maurice - majority 13846For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.General election results – party vote 2011-2017PakurangaPartyValid VotesShare (%)Valid VotesShare (%)Valid VotesShare (%)201120142017National Party20,47162.820,85460.4122,14961.86Labour Party6,06818.625,51115.968,87224.78New Zealand First Party1,8475.672,4567.112,3696.62Green Party2,0246.212,1926.351,3403.74The Opportunities Party (TOP)4361.22ACT New Zealand5851.791,0212.962720.76Māori Party1090.331080.311240.35Conservative1,1563.551,9305.59830.23Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party1120.341090.32690.19New Zealand People's Party320.09NZ Outdoors Party180.05United Future1490.46780.23160.04Ban1080110.0390.03Internet Party90.03Mana400.1260.02Democrats for Social Credit50.0280.0230.01Internet Mana2140.62The Civilian Party160.05NZ Independent Coalition80.02Focus New Zealand40.01Alliance200.06Libertarianz90.03Total Votes Cast32,995101.2334,963101.2835,903100.27Total Valid Votes32,59510034,52010035,807100Voter enrolment and turnout 2014 and 2017PakurangaNZPakurangaNZ20142017Voting Age Population (VAP)*50,7403,391,10052,4903,569,830Electors on General Roll (EGR)46,3072,900,47647,0263,046,216Electors on Māori Roll966239,9411,086251,793Total Enrolled**47,2733,140,41748,1123,298,009Total Votes Cast by EGR (TVC)34,9632,290,15036,2402,462,199% VAP Enrolled93939292Turnout (TVC as % EGR)76797781*Estimated population statistics as at: June 2014; June 2017. ** Electoral Enrolment Centre statistics as at September 2014; and Electoral Commission enrolment statistics as at September 2017.PeopleThis section has a variety of information about people living in the electorate. It also has information about residential building consents issued. The census distinguishes between dwellings, households, and families. A dwelling refers to the physical structure. A household is either one person who usually lives alone, or two or more people who usually live together. A family comprises a couple with or without children or one parent and their children. There are two tables describing homeownership. They differ in measuring ownership at the individual or the household level. A household may own their dwelling but not all people within that household share in the ownership.Households, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellingsPakuranga200620132018Total households20,07020,90121,303Annual average intercensal growth rate (%)…0.60.4Growth rate rank…4860New Zealand growth rate (%)…0.91.3Dwelling occupancy status, 2018 Censusfor all private dwellings?PakurangaNZOccupancy statusno.%rank%Occupied private dwellings21,38495.3589.7Total unoccupied private dwellings1,0654.76110.3 – Residents away5792.6615.3 – Empty dwellings4862.2575.1Total private dwellings22,449100.0?100.0Private dwellings under construction99???Number of bedrooms, 2018 Censusfor occupied private dwellings?PakurangaNZNumber of bedroomsno.%rank%One bedroom7593.5566.2Two bedrooms3,79517.73919.1Three bedrooms8,69740.74843.5Four bedrooms5,78127.02023.9Five or more bedrooms2,34911.087.3Total stated21,384100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included..???Total21,384???Household composition, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?PakurangaNZHousehold compositionNumberPercentRankPercentOne-family household15,47775.1568.6Two-family household1,1525.6113.3Three or more family household570.3140.2Other multi-person household6032.9635.1One-person household3,31516.15722.7Total stated20,604100.0?100.0Household composition unidentifiable699???Total21,303???Number of usually residents, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?PakurangaNZNumber of usually residentsno.%rank%One usual resident3,31516.05722.7Two usual residents5,92828.75333.2Three usual residents4,05019.6716.4Four usual residents4,35321.1415.6Five usual residents1,7888.6117.1Six usual residents7773.8112.9Seven usual residents2791.3141.1Eight or more usual residents1800.9250.9Total stated20,673100.0?100.0Number of usual residents unidentifiable630???Total21,303???Individual home ownership, 2018 Censusfor the population aged 15+?PakurangaNZOwnership statusno.%rank%Own or partly own16,26335.35240.8Hold in a family trust5,90112.81610.9Do not own and do not hold in a family trust23,89851.92248.2Total stated46,062100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included6,144???Total52,206???Tenure of household, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?PakurangaNZTenureno.%rank%Dwelling owned or partly owned10,25448.14851.3Dwelling held in a family trust3,52216.51113.3Dwelling not owned / held in a family trust7,52735.32535.5Total stated21,303100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included..???Total21,303???Sector of landlord, 2018 Censusfor households in rented occupied private dwellings?PakurangaNZSector of landlordno.%rank%Private person, trust, or business6,26492.8683.5Local authority or city council1622.4242.1Housing New Zealand Corporation2313.45512.0Iwi, hapū, or Māori land trust......0.3Other community housing provider691.0361.2Other government210.3520.9Total stated6,750100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included9???Total6,759???Weekly rent paid, 2018 Censusfor households in rented occupied private dwellings?PakurangaNZWeekly rent paidno.%rank%Under $100991.5626.5$100 -
