It includes the settlements of West Melton, Templeton, Prebbleton, Lincoln, Rolleston, Burnham, Leeston, Southbridge, Kirwee, Darfield, Springfield and Lake Coleridge.Selwyn was first formed in 1866 and has been abolished and subsequently reinstated no fewer than three times during its history to date. The three previous incarnations of the electorate existed from 1866 to 1919, from 1946 to 1969, and from 1978 to 1996. From 1969 to 1972, the electorate was called Ashburton, and between 1972 and 1978, it was known as Rakaia. The Selwyn electorate was most recently re-established for the 2008 general election and is currently the fastest growing electorate in New Zealand. As a result of its recent rapid growth, and following the Representation Commission’s 2020 boundary review, Selwyn has shed significant population to the neighbouring seats of Banks Peninsula (formerly Port Hills), Ilam and Wigram, including the removal from the electorate of the entire Banks Peninsula area. An area south of the Rakaia River has also been moved from Selwyn into the Rangitata electorate to allow for projected population growth and decline respectively. In the 2014 boundary review, there were also major changes to Selwyn, with the electorate gaining population around Rakaia, but losing the Christchurch suburbs of Harewood, Halswell, Westlake and Westmorland to other electorates.Since its reinstatement in 1946, Selwyn has been held exclusively by the National Party. The electorate’s longest-serving MP is John McAlpine who held the seat for twenty years from 1946 to 1966. Ruth Richardson, Minister of Finance during the 1990s in the fourth National Government, held the seat from 1981 to 1994. Selwyn is currently represented by Amy Adams (National), who has held the seat since it was re-established in 2008. Ms Adams recently announced that she will not be standing for Parliament again at the 2020 general election.Following the highest population growth between 2006 and 2013, the Selwyn electorate also had the highest annual average population growth rate between Census 2013 and Census 2018 (6.0%). This rate of growth was almost three times the New Zealand national annual average of 2.1%.Among general electorates in 2018, Selwyn ranked first in percentage share terms of: those aged 45-49 (8.3%); those who were partnered (71.3%); one family households (80.9%); four bedroom dwellings (43.8%); households which had two motor vehicles (48.2%); dwellings that were not damp (91.0%); those households with income between $100,001 and $150,000 (27.8%). The most prevalent industry sectors of those employed were those working in construction (11.7%), manufacturing (11.3%), and agriculture, forestry and fishing (9.6%).Election resultsElection results (2017)The winning candidate in the 2017 election, Amy Adams (National Party), captured a majority (66.2%) of the 43,318 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Selwyn electorate. The seat was previously won in 2014 by Amy Adams (National Party) with a margin of 20,561. The National Party also captured a majority (59.1%) of the party votes in Selwyn down 4.5 percentage points on its party vote share in 2014. Turnout (total votes cast as a proportion of enrolled electors) in 2017 was 87.2%.2017 General election results – electorate candidate votesSelwynCandidateValid VotesShare (%)ADAMS, Amy (NAT)28,68666.22CONDON, Tony (LAB)9,04720.89HORN, Chrys (GP)2,7726.4PALMER, Lindy Michelle (NZF)1,3453.1SNOYINK, Nicky (TOP)1,2702.93DAVIDSON, Brian (ACT)1980.46Total Valid Votes43,318100Total Votes Cast43,553100.54Winning Candidate: ADAMS, Amy - margin 19639For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.2014 General election results – electorate candidate votesSelwynCandidateValid VotesShare (%)ADAMS, Amy (NAT)24,62569.97HILL, Peter Selwyn (GP)4,06411.55DICKSON, Gordon John (LAB)3,83510.9WOODS, Bill (NZF)1,8415.23CLIBBORN, Roger (CNSP)6191.76GARDYNE, Sheryl (MAOR)1290.37GILBERT, Paul (ACT)830.24Total Valid Votes35,196100Total Votes Cast36,174102.78Winning Candidate: ADAMS, Amy - margin 20561For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.2011 General election results – electorate candidate votesSelwynCandidateValid VotesShare (%)ADAMS, Amy (NAT)24,96369.14McLEAN, Jo (LAB)5,51215.27SAGE, Eugenie Meryl (GP)3,67410.18WOODS, Bill (NZF)1,2773.54GRAY, Wilton (CNSP)6771.88Total Valid Votes36,103100Total Votes Cast37,168102.95Winning Candidate: ADAMS, Amy - majority 19451For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.General election results – party vote 2011-2017SelwynPartyValid VotesShare (%)Valid VotesShare (%)Valid VotesShare (%)201120142017National Party23,08662.6522,80963.5826,00359.11Labour Party5,94216.124,65412.9711,50826.16New Zealand First Party1,7504.752,4946.952,4405.55Green Party4,21511.443,91010.92,3395.32The Opportunities Party (TOP)1,1312.57ACT New Zealand3360.911390.392010.46Conservative9062.461,2533.49870.2Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party1230.331200.33790.18Māori Party1370.371110.31750.17Ban1080780.22410.09NZ Outdoors Party360.08United Future2560.69870.24320.07New Zealand People's Party110.03Internet Party60.01Democrats for Social Credit130.04100.0330.01Mana520.1420Internet Mana1840.51The Civilian Party160.04NZ Independent Coalition50.01Focus New Zealand50.01Alliance240.07Libertarianz110.03Total Votes Cast37,168100.8636,174100.8344,068100.17Total Valid Votes36,85110035,87510043,994100Voter enrolment and turnout 2014 and 2017SelwynNZSelwynNZ20142017Voting Age Population (VAP)*45,2203,391,10054,0603,569,830Electors on General Roll (EGR)42,8352,900,47650,7753,046,216Electors on Māori Roll1,062239,9411,328251,793Total Enrolled**43,8973,140,41752,1033,298,009Total Votes Cast by EGR (TVC)36,1742,290,15044,2832,462,199% VAP Enrolled97939692Turnout (TVC as % EGR)84798781*Estimated population statistics as at: June 2014; June 2017. ** Electoral Enrolment Centre statistics as at September 2014; and Electoral Commission enrolment statistics as at September 2017.PeopleThis section has a variety of information about people living in the electorate. It also has information about residential building consents issued. The census distinguishes between dwellings, households, and families. A dwelling refers to the physical structure. A household is either one person who usually lives alone, or two or more people who usually live together. A family comprises a couple with or without children or one parent and their children. There are two tables describing homeownership. They differ in measuring ownership at the individual or the household level. A household may own their dwelling but not all people within that household share in the ownership.Households, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellingsSelwyn200620132018Total households12,37216,24821,921Annual average intercensal growth rate (%)…4.06.2Growth rate rank…11New Zealand growth rate (%)…0.91.3Dwelling occupancy status, 2018 Censusfor all private dwellings?SelwynNZOccupancy statusno.%rank%Occupied private dwellings22,04791.83889.7Total unoccupied private dwellings1,9748.22810.3 – Residents away9333.9315.3 – Empty dwellings1,0414.3215.1Total private dwellings24,018100.0?100.0Private dwellings under construction570???Number of bedrooms, 2018 Censusfor occupied private dwellings?SelwynNZNumber of bedroomsno.%rank%One bedroom5462.5656.2Two bedrooms1,7618.06519.1Three bedrooms7,87835.86043.5Four bedrooms9,63643.8123.9Five or more bedrooms2,1909.9137.3Total stated22,011100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included36???Total22,047???Household composition, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?SelwynNZHousehold compositionNumberPercentRankPercentOne-family household17,22680.9168.6Two-family household5222.5393.3Three or more family household150.1510.2Other multi-person household6182.9645.1One-person household2,90713.76022.7Total stated21,288100.0?100.0Household composition unidentifiable633???Total21,921???Number of usually residents, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?SelwynNZNumber of usually residentsno.%rank%One usual resident2,90713.66022.7Two usual residents7,55435.42533.2Three usual residents3,84618.01916.4Four usual residents4,48821.1515.6Five usual residents1,7918.4167.1Six usual residents5312.5382.9Seven usual residents1170.5561.1Eight or more usual residents810.4550.9Total stated21,318100.0?100.0Number of usual residents unidentifiable606???Total21,921???Individual home ownership, 2018 Censusfor the population aged 15+?SelwynNZOwnership statusno.%rank%Own or partly own24,26452.8340.8Hold in a family trust5,37311.72410.9Do not own and do not hold in a family trust16,34435.56448.2Total stated45,978100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included4,677???Total50,655???Tenure of household, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?SelwynNZTenureno.%rank%Dwelling owned or partly owned14,18164.8251.3Dwelling held in a family trust3,18614.52013.3Dwelling not owned / held in a family trust4,53620.76435.5Total stated21,900100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included18???Total21,921???Sector of landlord, 2018 Censusfor households in rented occupied private dwellings?SelwynNZSector of landlordno.%rank%Private person, trust, or business3,48991.6983.5Local authority or city council360.9432.1Housing New Zealand Corporation150.46512.0Iwi, hapū, or Māori land trust......0.3Other community housing provider180.5611.2Other government2526.620.9Total stated3,810100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included6???Total3,816???Weekly rent paid, 2018 Censusfor households in rented occupied private dwellings?SelwynNZWeekly rent paidno.%rank%Under $1001173.1586.5$100 -
