This is a time in your Spiritual development as a Catholic, for you to mature in your Faith and to begin making important Religious decisions for yourself. You do not journey alone within our Christian community. Along the way, you make ties with certain members who demonstrate in their lives what it truly means to be Catholic. A Confirmation Sponsor has some of the same functions as that of being a Baptismal Godparent, except now, you choose the Sponsor for yourself.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the role of the Confirmation Sponsor is to, "Continue to help the Candidate along the road of Christian life, to safeguard and develop the Grace given at Baptism and now Sealed with the Holy Spirit." (CCC. 1320) In practical terms, this can have two aspects. The Sponsor must set an example for the Candidate by the life they live, including their ability to fail sin and ask for forgiveness, and to pray for the Candidate, asking God to look after them and help them to protect and treasure the Gifts they received at Confirmation.

A Sponsor at Confirmation is someone who stands up for you before the community, presents you to the Bishop, and Witnesses the Anointing with Holy Chrism. The Sponsor's influence in your life continues after the celebration. As you continue your journey of faith in the years ahead, the Sponsor should serve as someone you can turn to for help and guidance. Consider choosing a person that truly lives the Spirit, as you would like to live the Spirit. He/she should be someone who is over 16, is someone that you trust and respect, and is in good standing with the Catholic Church. This person will attend the final practice with you, and he/she will be by your side as you are Confirmed by the Bishop.

When it comes down to it, the Sponsor is simply being asked to be a Christian Witness and to help the Candidate to continue to be one, a special aspect of the calling we all received at Baptism. You are encouraged to choose a friend or a relative who will be part of your life throughout your years ahead & not just for a little while. Invite him/her early to be part of the process. Let them know ahead of time when the final practice date will be.
