Reflection paper on “Technology in Support”

What Have We Learned?”
Technology is growing in the classroom. Researchers are trying to understand why teachers are not using it as much as they should. Benefits of using technology to help students’ understanding is evident, but there seems to be a problem with teachers implementing it.
Middle grades are important gateways to high school grades. Technology is important in high school grades and if this technology is introduced and used more in middle grades there can be better use of it in the high school grades. Studies have shown that students’ attitude toward learning with technology is good and that students actually enjoy the student-centered learning, then why aren’t teachers using it more?
It seems like it all goes back to the teachers. Preparation and development for teachers is what is lacking. Teachers need inservice programs and professional development that teaches them how to correctly use the technology in their classrooms. The attitudes of the teachers is basically what is standing in the way of students using technology. Those that do not have a lack of training have not been able to see how much of a help technology can be including calculators.
Results of studies on the effects of technology on mathematical skills and conceptual knowledge are mixed. This shows that not enough research has been done and not over a long enough period of time. I think if teachers began using some technology in primary grades, increased the use in middle grades and high grades then the studies may show a more positive relationship of the effects on mathematical skills and conceptual knowledge.
Hopefully new teachers coming out of college will be able to help implement more technology use in the classroom. I have learned so much in the last two years of school about how, when, and why to incorporate technology in the classroom which I will take with me into the high school. Colleges and universities are trying to teach soon-to-be teachers about this technology and prepare them with tools to take into the classroom when the graduate.
