CPSC 391 Special Projects in Computer Science

Prerequisite: Computer Science 230 or higher. Intensive individual investigation of significant research problem under the direction of a faculty member. Minimum GPA and course prerequisites apply.

CPSC 491 Individual Study in Computer Science

Prerequisite: Departmental permission. Individual study under the direction of a member of the department. Minimum GPA and course prerequisites apply. Students who wish to enroll in individual study CPSC 491 need to have successfully completed two Computer Sciences courses numbered greater than 302. May be repeated for credit with a change in topic. Two semesters of 3-credits of study required for graduation with Departmental Honors. In special cases when a student requesting an individual study project has not taken the required prerequisite courses, permission may still be granted on the advice of the advisor and sponsoring faculty member, after discussion and approval of the department members.

Departmental Honors:

In order to graduate with departmental honors, the student must have an overall GPA of at least 3.00, a major GPA of at least 3.25, must have completed two semesters of individual study (3 credits each) culminating in a project of superior quality, must be nominated by a member of the department faculty, and must successfully present his/her thesis before the department. By the first day of the final semester of your project you must complete and submit the “Honors Project Proposal” which is available on the Computer Science at UMW web site. Upon departmental approval, supervised individual research conducted at an accredited college or university may be counted as one of the two required semesters.
