Lab 1 Preparing to Install Windows 7

Windows 7 provides no upgrade path from Windows XP. The only option you have is to do a clean install of the Windows 7 operating system. To run Windows 7, including the Aero desktop experience features, on an computer running a earlier version of Windows, the computer needs to meet the following minimum requirements:

• 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

• 1 gigabyte (GB) of system memory (RAM) for 32-bit systems; 2 GB for 64-bit systems

• 16 GB of available hard disk drive space for 32-bit systems; 20 GB for 64-bit systems

• Support for DirectX 9 graphics with Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.0 or higher driver and 128 megabytes (MB) memory (to enable the Aero theme)

• Internal or external DVD drive

• Monitor with minimum 1024 × 768 screen resolution

• Keyboard and mouse or compatible pointing device

• Internet connection for product activation, accessing online Help topics, and any other Internet-dependent processes

Using the Windows Upgrade Advisor

To determine if the current system will support Windows 7 you should run the Windows Upgrade advisor. The following steps will perform this task.

1. Log on with your local Administrator account (the password is P@sswOrd).

2. Open Internet Explorer and enter the following address windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

3. Click on the Download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor button.

4. Click on the Download button.

5. In the Download File – Security Warring dialog box click on Run. A window verify your current system will appear

6. When completed an Internet Explorer – Security Warning dialog box will appear, click Run. After a moment the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor wizard will appear.

7. Accept the licensing terms and click Install.

8. In the Installation Complete window make sure that Launch Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is selected and click close. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor window appears.

9. Click on Start Check, the process will take a few minutes to complete.

10. Under Custom Installation Required Go to the Web site indicated and answer the following questions.

11. Click on the link next to Windows Aero Support and answer the following questions

12. Go back to the Main Advisor page.

Using Windows Easy Transfer to Transfer Files and Settings

To transfer files and setting from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 7 computer you must use the Easy Transfer application.

Downloading and Installing Windows 7 Easy Transfer

To start this process you must find and download the Easy transfer application on Microsoft’s Web site. The best way to do this is:

1. Start Internet Explorer

2. Go to the Google search engine and type in Windows System 7 Easy Transfer.

3. From the list that appears select a site that will allow you to download the Easy Transfer application.

4. On the Web page that appears click on the Download Button.

5. In the dialog box that appears click Run.

6. In the dialog box that appears click Run, after a few minutes the Windows Easy Transfer for Windows 7 wizard will appear.

7. In the Software Update Installation Wizard, click Next.

8. In the next windows select I Agree, and then click Next.

9. After installation is complete, click Finish.

Open and run Windows Easy Transfer to save your files and settings

1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Easy Transfer for Windows 7.

2. Click Next.

3. Select An external hard disk or USB flash drive

4. Click This is my old computer, and then wait while Windows Easy Transfer scans the computer.

5. When the scan is complete make sure all of the accounts are checked.

Question 8: What Information is being saved for each user checked (hint open the Customize link and look at the list)?

6. Click Next.

7. Enter and retype the password (P@ssw0rd) and then click Save.

8. In the Save your Easy Transfer file window select the Data (L:) (think of the L: drive as a USB or externally connected hard drive.

9. Click open.

10. Click Save. The transfer file will be saved.

11. Click Next

12. Click Next

13. Click Close

14. Ensure that the file is saved to the L: drive.

15. Close all Windows.
