Abstract

This white paper presents an overview of the preinstalled operating system along with a brief description of major software components and features. This white paper covers the new HP Business Desktop 8200 Elite and 6200 Pro models.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are used in this document: Preinstalled applications ? Applications that are installed in the factory and are ready to use immediately. Preloaded applications ? Applications from HP that are loaded on the hard drive in an uninstalled state; the user must install the application manually before it can be used. The HP Software Setup application provides a simple interface to access the uninstalled applications. Software Setup ?An application provided by HP that makes it easier to locate and install software that is preloaded (not preinstalled) on the hard drive. Product family ? A set of form-factor types within a numerically defined series. For example, the HP Business Desktop 8200 Series consists of the HP 8200 Convertible

Minitower Business PC, HP 8200 Small Form Factor Business PC, and the HP 8200 Ultra-slim Desktop Business PC. QFE ? Often referred as QFE's, QB's or quick fixes, Microsoft calls them Quick Fix Engineering Software Updates. The QFE's are important software updates provided by Microsoft and many are included in operating system images provided by HP. Standalone service packs ? A large collection of QFE's from Microsoft that are grouped together to provide a significant update to an existing Microsoft operating system, e.g. Windows 7 SP1.

Note: "Pre-installed /supported" is defined as follows: -- Operating System offered for sale pre-installed on

a delivered system -- Drivers fully WHQL certified -- Drivers posted to WEB () at product

announcement.

The following operating systems are certified but not preinstalled on the 8200 Elite and 6200 Pro: ? Novell SLED ? Red Hat Desktop RHEL

Note: "Certified" is defined as follows: -- Hardware is provided to software vendor for testing and

certification. All drivers are OS-vendor dependant and not supported by HP. -- Certification is posted to vendor website.

Software Components

The 8200 Elite and 6200 Pro is available with a choice of several versions of Microsoft Windows? 7 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows? Vista Service Pack 2. Tables 1 and 2 list the software components added to the HP 8200 Elite and 6200 Pro which may serve as a guide for IT Professionals.

Common Image Considerations

One of the design benefits of the HP 8200 Elite and 6200 Pro series is that HP carefully engineers the software image to be compatible across the various form factors within each family. An important ingredient is delivering common hardware architecture to reduce image compatibility issues.

HP realizes that many of our customers create their own OS images to incorporate applications and standards for their business. For customers who create their own images, HP recommends starting with the factory-preinstalled image as a "base" for the common image. If the file system type or the partition structure is not desirable, HP recommends that you still use the factory-preinstalled image to build the common image. File system and partitioning can be customized during the image load phase of the deployment process.

If the factory-preinstalled image has already been removed from the hard drive, you can restore that image using the HP Recovery Manager / Recovery Disk Creation application included with the computer. For more information on building a common image please refer to HP document "Building a Common Image, Developing a Common software image for the 8200 Elite and 6200 Pro HP desktop models."

Software Delivery

Software updates for HP commercial computers are available through the following methods: ? HP Worldwide Web site and Download Facility () ? HP System Recovery Restore DVD (ISO files included in HDD partition as part of

the HP Recovery Manager / Recovery Disk Creation application)

HP Worldwide Web site and download facility:

Individual drivers and utilities can be downloaded in the form of Softpaqs from the HP Download Facility or from the Web site at or (Support & Drivers Link in the upper right corner of the page). Softpaqs provide a distribution method for driver and ROM updates and product software enhancements.

HP System Recovery Restore DVD:

HP System Recovery Restore DVDs are provided with each HP desktop system as ISO files located in a recovery partition on the Hard Drive (HDD). The ISO files can be accessed with the HP Recovery Manager / Recovery Disk Creation application to burn to DVD or to be moved to another safe location for later burning. The DVDs provide an easy-to-use complete restore solution for preinstalled operating systems. This restore solution allows users to return the operating system to near factory state.
