Dr. Donald R. Small is currently a Professor of Education and Director of Faculty Development at Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina, where he assists aspiring faculty in the pursuit of the terminal degree. For the past 3 years (as a private consultant), he has served as an evaluator for a CBEA-funded Abstinence before Marriage project based in Orangeburg, South Carolina. At Voorhees College, Dr. Small is an evaluator and co-author of the proposals for two Department of Education-funded grants supporting the establishment of a B.S. degree program in Emergency Management (with a hazmat concentration) and a STEM Summer Camp project targeting the “best and the brightest” high school students in the counties adjacent to Voorhees College.

Dr. Small occasionally teaches Statistics and Research in the college’s Adult Education Program, and he collects and manages much of the college’s performance data. He has varied training and experience in teaching strategies and applications in education at all levels: elementary, middle school, high school, and college. A former sixth grade teacher and middle school administrator in high-poverty settings, Dr. Small has firsthand knowledge of how “at-risk” students learn, and “when and why they do not learn.”

Privately, Dr. Small has served with the Orangeburg Aviation Commission for more than 13 years, and he is a charter member of the South Carolina Aviation Association. He is a former member of the Orangeburg Area Mental Health Board of Trustees and founding head minister of WORDSTAAR Coalescent Ministries, a youth-empowerment ministry designed to address the many socio-academic and spiritual problems that beset youth today. From this ministry was born the WORDSTAAR Learning Institute, which he operates as the consultative affiliate of the Serious Teens and Adults Acting Responsibly (STAAR) youth empowerment program. The STAAR program has operated 20+ years and boasts a membership of more than 10,000 across 10 States and 2 African countries.

Dr. Small’s most recent book publications are Right Word Finder (2002) and Words of a Servant (2002), both published under Authorhouse Publishers.

Dr. Small hopes to see Voorhees College take a fitting place as a regional training resource center for emergency management and response to human and natural emergencies in South Carolina.
