Honors World History

Mrs. Vazquez

Course Description:

The grade 9-12 World History Honors course consists of the following content area strands: World History, Geography and Humanities. This course is a continued in-depth study of the history of civilizations and societies from the middle school course, and includes the history of civilizations and societies of North and South America. Students will be exposed to historical periods leading to the beginning of the 21st Century. So that students can clearly see the relationship between cause and effect in historical events, students should have the opportunity to review those fundamental ideas and events from ancient and classical civilizations.

This course offers scaffolded learning opportunities for students to develop the critical skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in a more rigorous and reflective academic setting.  Students are empowered to perform at higher levels as they engage in the following: analyzing historical documents and supplementary readings, working in the context of thematically categorized information, becoming proficient in note-taking, participating in Socratic seminars/discussions, emphasizing free-response and document-based writing, contrasting opposing viewpoints, solving problems, etc. Students will develop and demonstrate their skills through participation in a capstone and/or extended research-based paper/project (e.g., history fair, geography bee, participatory citizenship project, investment portfolio contests, or other teacher-directed projects).

Class Expectations and Procedures

1. Students will be in their assigned seat before the tardy bell rings. I do not accept homework if a student is unexcused tardy to class. After the 3rd tardy and for each subsequent tardy in a grading period, a detention will be issued.

2. Students and teachers have a right to a safe and positive learning environment. A good class must be based on mutual respect. Everyone will treat each other in a civilized and respectful manner. This includes, but is not limited to, sleeping, chewing gum, inattention, grooming, and skipping. There is a zero tolerance policy in my classroom. Any signs of disrespect to either a fellow student or the teacher will earn you an automatic detention.

3. All non-instructional electronic devices will be shut off and in your book bag during class. This includes, but is not limited to, cell phones and iPods. Devices will be confiscated and turned in to administration. There will be no exceptions. Consider this your warning.

4. Students will follow the CRHS dress code policy at all times. The uniform policy will be enforced in the classroom. You must also wear your ID at all times.

5. If you are absent (excused), you must make up all oral questions, movies, quizzes, etc., after school. Make-ups must be scheduled with the teacher in advance. It is the student’s responsibility to present their excused admit and request

make-up work upon their return to class. Make-up work may only be turned in up to one week after the date of the absence. If the student was in class when an assignment was given, it is expected immediately upon their return to class.

6. Assignments are to be turned in on time. Late assignments will be accepted on an individual basis and will be lowered one later grade per day (not per period) the assignment is late. I reserve the right not to accept late work.

7. Students are responsible for their textbook and are to bring it to class every day. Books are not to be written in, torn, or marked. Students will be held financially accountable for the condition for the condition or loss of their book.

8. All assignments are to be completed in blue or black ink. Assignments completed outside of class may be typed.

9. Restroom passes are on a first come, first served basis and only one student is allowed at a time. Passes are never allowed during the first or last 10 minutes of class, during silent reading, during lecture, or during quizzes/tests.

10. Campus activities/field trips must be approved by me prior to a student’s participation. Students are responsible for all work missed and must take tests on the regularly scheduled dates.

11. Plagiarism is the act of using, and passing off as your own, someone else’s work. This includes copying someone else’s homework/class work. This is cheating: cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. If you are caught, an F will be given on the assignment, your parents will be notified, and you will be referred to the administration.

Failure to abide by the expectations and procedures listed above will result in discipline according to the established CRHS policy as listed in the Student Handbook.
