Class Rules and Responsibilities

Description:

This class will cover different periods in American history ranging from the Civil War to the United States in the world today. We will study these periods of time with a focus on their social, political, and economic causes and effects, individuals who influenced these events, and trends in U.S. history. This class will prepare you to pass the U.S. History EOC exam in May, which will determine 30% of your final grade in this class.

As students in this class you will be expected to take notes on the material and to participate in discussions and readings. You will also be expected to participate in classroom activities and projects. Also throughout this grading period you will learn to analyze primary and secondary sources, employ the Internet as a research tool, practice reading critically, and use higher order thinking skills as historians do. The Keyword is PARTICIPATE!!!!

Students Responsibilities/Materials/Class Procedures:

It is expected that you will extend the same degree of respect to the teacher and to your peers as you expect in return. Please consult the Student Handbook for a detailed explanation of school tardy/conduct/class policies.

You must bring to this class a professional attitude, which means coming to class ready to work. If you come unprepared to class or do not participate you will be sent to CSI and your parents will be contacted.

• Homework – Generally 2 assignments per week. Late assignments will be reduced by one letter grade for each day they are late. Assignments not turned in will result in an “F”.

• Bell Work - After the bell rings you are expected to look at the front board and do the bell work that is assigned quietly, you will only have about 5 minutes to do so and turn it in. They will consist of vocabulary words, reading questions, or pop quiz questions. Those of you that are tardy will not be allowed to get any credit and if you are absent it will not count against only if you have an excused absence, but you will still be responsible for knowing what topic was covered. Failure to have enough bell works will result in one lower grade.

• Notebook – You will be required to keep a composition notebook for safekeeping of notes and handouts. There will be a notebook check at the end of the 2nd and 4th nine weeks prior to exams worth 4-6 grades. Your notebook is the key to passing all my tests!!!!

• Exams – There will be one test every 2-3 weeks. Tests can be made-up within 3 days of an excused absence. Make-up exams will be administered after school (you are responsible for making the necessary arrangements with me and your parents)

• Materials – Be sure to bring pen/pencil, notebook/journal to class everyday.

• Absences/Tardies –

If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what work you have to make-up, come and see me before or after class.

Excessive unsatisfactory absences and class cutting will result in detentions, parent phone calls, referrals, and lower academic/conduct grades.

***Remember that referrals become a part of your permanent record. Do not put yourself in a position to receive one***

• Classroom Conduct/Behavior – Misbehaviors that disturb the learning environment such as talking without permission, sleeping, talking on the cell phone, etc.will not be tolerated and will be handled in the following manner:

1st time – verbal warning

2nd time – detention with parent phone call

3rd time – referral

***Abusive and excessive misbehavior will result in your immediate removal from my classroom to be dealt with by the administration***

• Cheating/Plagiarism – Will not be tolerated in this class! Copying and other forms of cheating will result in an “F” for everyone involved.

• Grades – The final nine-week grade, which will be assigned by me, will be based on a combined average of your participation, bell work, silent reading grades, class work, homework, notebook/journal, projects and exams. If you are absent or tardy a lot your grade will seriously suffer – remember if your not here without an excused absence you can’t participate so you can’t get a grade!!!

The Hialeah High Grade Scale is as follows:

90-100% = A

80-89% = B

70-79% = C

60-69% = D

0-59% = F

• Problems/Questions – I will be more than willing to discuss anything that you need help with or need clarified, just ask me before or after class.
