Honors Legal Systems and Concepts & Court Procedures

Mrs. Soto

Class Syllabus

Description:

This course focuses on the American Legal System and Court Procedures. We are going to examine the legal system, how it works, and how it impacts the lives of its citizens. We are also going to examine mediation and how it impacts our legal system. We are going to focus on: civil and criminal justice procedures, intensive mock trials, and peer mediation skills. You will be conducting mediations for the school to help with conflict resolution and school safety.

As students in this class you will be expected to take notes on the lecture material, PARTICIPATE in discussions, debates, peer mediations, and keep up to date with assignments and readings.

Students Responsibilities/Materials/Class Procedures:

It is expected that you will extend the same degree of respect to the teacher and to your peers as you expect in return. Please consult the Student Handbook for a detailed explanation of school tardy/conduct/class policies.

You must bring to this class a professional attitude, which means coming to class ready to work. You will be expected to participate everyday!!!

• Homework –Late assignments will be reduced by one letter grade for each day they are late. Assignments not turned in will result in an “F”.

• Journal – You will be expected to keep a journal (a composition book) for this class. You are expected to be seated quietly and writing in your journal for the first 5-10 minutes of class. There will be one journal check every 9-week period, worth 10 grades.

• Notebook – You will be required to keep a notebook for safekeeping of notes and handouts. There will be a notebook check at the end of the 2nd and 4th nine weeks prior to exams, worth 10 grades. Your notebook is the key to passing all of my tests!!!

• Tests – There will be one test every 2-3 weeks. Tests can be made-up within 3 days of a satisfactory absence. Make-up exams will be administered at after school (you are responsible for making the arrangements)

• Materials – Be sure to bring pen/pencil, and notebook/journal to class everyday.

• Absences/Tardies –

If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what work you have to make-up, come and see me before or after class. If you are tardy more than 2 times you will be given a pass to CSI.

Excessive unsatisfactory absences and class cutting will result in detentions, parent phone calls, referrals, and lower academic/conduct grades.

***Remember that referrals become a part of your permanent record; a no-no for colleges). Do not put yourself in a position to receive one***

• Classroom Conduct/Behavior – Misbehaviors that disturb the learning environment such as talking without permission, sleeping, talking on the cell phone, etc. will not be tolerated and will be handled in the following manner:

1st time – verbal warning

2nd time – detention with parent phone call

3rd time – referral

***Abusive and excessive misbehavior will result in immediate removal of the student from the classroom to be dealt with administratively***

• Cheating/Plagiarism – Will not be tolerated in this class! Copying and other forms of cheating will result in an “F” for everyone involved.

• Grades – The final nine-week grade will be based on a combined average of your participation, silent reading grades, class work, homework, notebook/journal, mock trials, and exams. If you are absent or tardy a lot your grade will seriously suffer – remember if your not here without an excused absence you can’t participate so you can’t get a grade!!!

The Hialeah High Grade Scale is as follows:

90-100% = A

80-89% = B

70-79% = C

60-69% = D

0-59% = F

• Problems/Questions – I will be more than willing to discuss anything that you need help with or need clarified, just ask me before or after class.
