Pupil 1: This is about an extract from the story ‘Warhorse’ written by Michael Morpurgo and it’s a book about a horse called Joey that was taken from his home in England and ordered to serve in the battlefields of France in World War One and the question is, how useful is the extract in helping us understand the experiences of horses on the Western Front during World War One?

Pupil 2: Well, it’s written by Michael Morpurgo who is like a famous author so he will have to have gone and done all his research from like libraries and finding sources and speak to people who know people who were in the war

Pupil 1: Yes, the limitation with that though is that it’s not his personal experience, it’s from a source so, and it will probably be adapted, it’s a fictional book so it will probably be adapted from a source so it’s not going to be 100% true

Pupil 3: But yet it still tells us a lot about the thoughts and feelings of people battling in the trenches in World War One

Pupil 1: I think he wrote it to tell people what it was like in the trenches and how, what the horses were going through and what the people were going through and just about what it was like

Pupil 2: Yes but a lot of it is like fictional so it’s not based some point in like the war but a lot of it is like fake

Pupil 1: Yes, well to sum up its useful because it is a story and its telling you about the war was like and how, what their emotions were like and how they were feeling but it doesn’t tell you, well it is a story, it’s fictional so it’s not going to be 100% true.
