Mini-lesson requirements:

Day 1

1. Go over rubric as a class

2. Pass out HPB Anchor Paper 4

3. Discuss with students: “What questions does this paper answer?”

4. Pass out blank note card hand out

5. Have students direct you to where they find the answers to the questions in the essay

Day 2

1. K-W-L for the Mexican Revolution

2. Pass out and go over the Peer Editing Checklist hand out

3. Pass out 5 index cards to each student

a. Have students write 1 question they hope to have answered about the Mexican Revolution on each card.

b. Students can use the HPB Anchor questions, the “W” from the KWL, or original questions they think of

4. Pass out the Mexican Revolution research pages

5. Read the research to students, having them follow along on their copies.

6. Re-read the articles, this time breaking down the more difficult sections- have students copy your “translations” onto their research pages

7. Create a Cause & Effect chart together

8. Equip students with highlighters

9. Students now re-read the research on their own. They-

a. Highlight where the questions on their index cards are answered

b. If they finish and have not found the answer to their question, they may ask for a new index card and write a new question they know the research does answer

c. Each student should have a minimum of 5 cards with answerable questions

10. Students paraphrase answers onto notecards, using cause & effect chart as well as research pages

Day 3

Students -

1. Continue paraphrasing answers to research questions onto notecards

2. Organize notecards in the order they would like their paragraphs to be (teacher can assist with this)

3. Students write 1st draft

4. Students peer edit using the Peer Editing Checklist and highlighters

5. Students write 2nd draft, skipping lines and turn it into the teacher

6. Teacher edits using post-it notes and highlighters

7. Students write final draft
