Over 96,000 AEP Customers in Ohio Without Power July 25

As of 11:00 am this morning, more than 62,000 customers of American Electric Power throughout Ohio remain without power after a strong thunderstorm swept through the area Monday night. At the height of the storm, more than 96,000 customers were without power. The hardest hit areas were in the Ohio Valley, with other outages as follows:

• Ohio Valley, including Steubenville and Belmont County - 19,000 customers.

• Athens area, including Athens, McConnelsville, Crooksville, Wellston, Lancaster, Pomeroy, and Pt. Pleasant, W.Va. - 18,500 customers.

• Newark Area, including Newark, Mt. Vernon, Cambridge and Zanesville -11,600 customers.

• Canton Area, including Canton, New Philadelphia and Coshocton- 6,000 customers.

• Wheeling area, including Ohio and Marshall counties - 5,880 customers.

• Columbus area, including Franklin and Delaware Counties - 993 customers.

AEP estimates that power will be restored to 90 percent of its Ohio’s customers by July 28.



86,000 Without Power in South Carolina

Some 86,000 customers were without power Monday night after storms accompanied by high winds moved through South Carolina. As of Tuesday, 14,000 remained without power.



50,000 Appalachian Power Customers Lost Power July 25

After violent thunderstorms battered West Virginia, about 50,000 Appalachian Power customers were without power As of this morning, about 14,000 remained without electricity,



High Winds Caused 24,000 ComEd Customers to Lose Power in Illinois

Winds from severe storms Monday night left 24,000 ComEd customers without power in Cook and DuPage counties. As of 7 a.m. this morning, over 15,000 remained without power. Although the utility is working to restore power, no estimated date is available.



12,000 Allegheny Power Customers Lost Power in Pennsylvania July 25

A thunderstorm Monday afternoon caused power outages to 12,000 Allegheny Power customers. Utility crews worked through the night to restore electricity. According to company sources, as many as 67,000 customers lost power system-wide.

Pepco’s All-time Peak Demand Broken in DC and Maryland

Pepco’s all-time peak demand of 6,364 MW (set July 29, 2002) was broken Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. as customers demanded 6,452 MW of power. Pepco expects a new record to be broken today as a result of the extremely hot, humid weather. The utility Pepco is asking customers to use energy wisely to prevent possible power supply problems.



LG&E Energy Set Record in Kentucky July 25

LG&E Energy set a record of an estimated 6,691 MW between 4 and 5 p.m., breaking the August 2002 record of 6,513 MW. The company is asking customers to voluntarily conserve energy.



Rail Problems Contributing to Lower Wyoming Coal Stockpiles

Coal stockpiles are eroding and are expected to end the year at near-record lows due to service disruptions along Wyoming’s rail lines.



Railroads Working Hard to Meet Coal Demand

Union Pacific Corporation plans to purchase 4,000 new railcars and 315 locomotives to meet the demand of coal production in Colorado. More coal is being transported from Colorado than ever before.



Faulty Insulator Automatically Shuts Down Vermont Yankee

The 510 MW Vermont Yankee nuclear generating station of Entergy Corp automatically shut down on July 25 when an insulator failed in the switchyard. The company has no estimate when the unit will return to service.

Moss Landing Unit 6 Shut Down

The 739 MW gas-fired unit 6 at the Duke Energy Moss Landing generating facility in California was shut down for unplanned reasons July 26 according to a report of the California Independent System operator.

Ormond Beach Unit 1 returns to Service

The 741 MW gas-fired unit 1 at the Ormond Beach generating facility of Reliant Energy returned to service by late July 25 according to a report filed with the California Independent System Operator. The unit was shut earlier the same day for unplanned reasons.

SCE’s Mohave Unit 2 Returns to Service

The 790 MW unit 2 at the Mohave coal-fired plant of Southern California Edison returned to service following an unplanned outage that began on July 22.

FCC Unit at BP’s Texas City Refinery to Briefly shut for Repairs

BP announced that it will shut an electrostatic precipitator inlet cell on a fluid catalytic cracking unit at the 470,000 b/d Texas City refinery to replace a faulty part. The unit will be offline from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CDT on July 26.

Start up for BP’s Thunder Horse Unlikely This Year

BP announced on July 26 that its large offshore production platform found listing following Hurricane Dennis is unlikely to be placed in service before the end of the year as had been originally planned.
