Thematic Visual Project

DUE DATE: FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2012 (Digital Portfolio)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The yin yang symbol has equal parts of black and white. However, it is not simply drawn as a box with half shaded in, and the symbol is not arbitrary.

Instead, the Chinese Buddhist Confucius created a symbol to show that whenever there is a lot of white, there’s still a little black; and, wherever there is a lot of black, a little white still exists.

Now, if we make white represent the good parts of life and black the bad, we can apply it to our stories. Stories about the Holocaust reveal that even when the prisoners are in a state of despair (black), there existed a tiny bit of hope (white). Whenever you’re having a really great day, there’s still the possibility something might go wrong. Conversely, whenever you’re having a really bad day, there’s still the possibility that something good may happen.

DIRECTIONS: Create a collage (see examples in class for exemplary work) of magazine words and images that show the good parts of life and the bad parts of life. Then, arrange them in the shape of the yin yang. It doesn’t have to be perfectly circle; in fact, it shouldn’t be. You want one side to be mostly good words, phrases, and pictures, and the other side to be mostly the bad ones, but put a few bad in with the good and few good ones in with the bad. There should be no white paper showing through. You will use an 8.5 x 11 in piece of paper.
