Despite his efforts, it is made obvious that another has already taken the heart of this girl. Bruno expresses the insane and extraordinary things he would do just to cement his desire to be hers.ST: Performance inside of Narrative. The video shows the effort and struggles Bruno Mars encounters in order to win the affection of a loved one, this is emphasised by showing him pulling piano across town, just so he can sing his heart out for her to understand the way that he feels. The storyline coincides with the lyrics “But you won’t do the same” when he gets rejected by the person he has feelings for. Filmed so we have a third perspective of the action, we accompany Bruno on this journey to confess his love. The narrative storyline is for entertainment purposes. The obstacles are symbolic to his devotion and dedication. The story line is easy to follow: his struggle, his realisation and then his own suicide – which is not seen but we can fathom that is the only possible conclusion if you were to be hit by a train. The dramatic ending is for entertainment purposes only. The performance aspect is not to promote himself as an artist. The lyrical song is very emotional and personal for the artist, it is written as if it were his thoughts throughout the video, practising confessing just to what extent he loves this person in hope of acceptance. PR: The purpose is just to entertain the audience with a short film. He does this by allowing us to see the emotion in his words through his facial expressions. Simply from his expressive actions when pushing the piano, we as an audience member, can see how much strength and resilience is required to complete the journey, the physical and emotional : Mostly, Bruno can be found on one of the third dividing line to resemble the conventions of cinematic filmography, this is usual when there is a close-up of Bruno singing – sometimes they will pan around him at centre. Otherwise, the action of him pulling the piano is kept central so that we do not have to scan the screen for the action. The shots with him just singing without the piano are filmed in his room while it rain. The surroundings mimic his dreary state, the rain acting as tears, reflecting his emotion. The contrast in lighting between when he is pulling the piano to when he is sitting in his room is immense. The difference in light could also reflect his diminishing level of hope. During the day, he sets out on a task that could make or break him. Come the evening, he is drained (mimicking lack of colour) and without optimism. The camera is used to track and pan around Bruno as he staggers through town, featuring close-ups and mid-shots mostly to highlight the artist and emotion. Close-ups make the content feel more personal, the artist become more transparent. Also, there aren’t any special effects to expose the harsh reality that Bruno is living. In the same way Bruno has to cushion to fall on to make his situation any better, the visuals aren’t dubbed for his benefit. The transitions from scene to scene use jump cuts, a very common technique used when filming music videos. This allows us to see the subtle and extraordinary differences in each shot. The impact when there is a change is noticed – in this video, when the lighting changes from warm and hot to dark and dreary the effects it has on the mood and tone of the video is astronomical. Suddenly, the entire vibe of the video transforms from one of hope to one of utter misery, with him at the epicentre if this explosion of emotion.Despite Bruno Mars being involved in the popular culture of pop and hip-hop genres, the music video doesn’t promote himself. It sticks to a regimented storyline; there is a definite beginning, middle and end. The dramatic changes in scenery hint at the fact that lyrically the song still applies be it before or after his heart was broken, almost as if we are watching him look back over his actions, to a time when he was still encouraged by the wishes of his heart to strive for his goal. In my opinion, the scenes with Bruno sitting himself are from after his pursuit for the woman, and he is evaluating his actions. And he comes to a logical conclusion that he still would do anything for the woman, even if he doesn’t hold her heart. These are not the stereotypical conventions of a pop/hip-hop artist whom we would expect to have boasted about his money and expensive possessions, having them feature in the music video for self-promotion purposes. The video is filmed during different hours of the day but obviously, shooting would have taken weeks to finalise.Another Brief breakdownGalway Girl – Ed Sheeran 318,040,284 views on YouTubeST: Mostly narrative. The video starts off with Ed playing a stadium but quickly the camera transforms, putting us in his shoes so we see the world from his perspective as he travels the backstreets of Ireland. We follow Ed’s eventful evening as he, accompanied by a woman (Soirse Ronan), gets up to all kinds of mischief meeting people, dancing, getting drunk and causing upset. Some of the scenes can be seen as humours. It could be argued that it isn’t a stylised performance, despite the video having a definitive beginning, middle and end; there isn’t actually a storyline, which allows for creativity and freedom when working. Some of the scenes appear to be unrehearsed.PR: the video again does not promote the artists talent for very long, as we only see a snippet of his performance at the beginning of the music video. The main purpose is to advertise the land Ed Sheeran calls home, Ireland, showing off the casual night out the locals love. It is a light-hearted music video without meaning or moral. Entertainment is the main objective which is the reason the night contains so many events that are unlikely i.e. Throwing a dart in someone’s head, being knocked out, finding people drinking at a table in the toilets and being chased into the streets. The video enforces the idea of making your own : The conventions are very rare to find in a music video, whereby the action is witnessed from 1st person perspective. This helps to immerse the viewer into the video, as if they are experiencing the events first hand. The action is kept central as if it was the eye, as we always have the most action central in vision. Ed deliberately breaks the 4th wall by writing a note, welcoming us – the viewer – to Galway. This again is a very rare thing for a music video to do but it is done on purpose to make the audience feel welcomed into his life and his experiences. The colours are very warming and welcoming to aid in this atmosphere. This is done to emphasise the feeling that Galway is very welcoming and friendly; we see the world around us as Ed does. His opinion of Ireland being very high, it is obvious that he would want us to view the towns he loves in the same light. If the colours were dark and dreary, we wouldn’t feel very welcome or comfortable patrolling the streets or interacting with the public. The use of lighting creates a calm and inviting atmosphere, gracious and affable. There would have been a huge amount of colour correction, increasing the warmth of shots to create this cosy atmosphere that is enforced. The yellows and saturation of each shot, as well as the white balance would have been increased. The video doesn’t use cuts to switch between settings or scenes too much. It uses time manipulation to guide you to the most eventful parts of the evening as if you were walking through the town yourself. This also creates the effect that a part of the evening becomes blurry, almost as if the viewer is experiencing the effects of alcohol as Ed is. However, the video is very realistic lacking in any special effects. This may be to show how the town doesn’t need improving or changing in any way as it is already perfect the way it is.This video ultimately serves as a love story for the little Irish town. Soirse arguably is the embodiment of Ireland that Ed indeed seems to be in a romantic relationship with – reflecting his adore for the Irish land itself. ................
