Further information can be found at These rules should be read in conjunction with the ‘How to’ Guide on the next page.REPRESENTATIONClubs may enter one team.ELIGIBILITY A team shall consist of five members, each of whom must be 26 years of age or under on on 1st September 2018 and full members of a Club affiliated to petitors are required in person to produce on the day of the competition their current and signed Membership Card, with suitable photograph, or a fine of ?10 will be imposed for non-production.PROCEDUREThe team shall consist of a Chairman, Speaker (who will propose the main toast), Respondent to Speaker, Proposer to Visitors (propose a toast to the visitors) and a Respondent to respond on behalf of the visitors.The Chairman will address the diners and introduce the Speakers in order of appearance.The teams will be split so that the Chairman, Respondent to Speaker and Proposer to Visitors will come from Team A, and Speaker and Respondent on behalf of Visitors from Team B.Teams will be notified four weeks prior to the competition of their Toast for the evening. All must be 26 years of age and under on on 1st September 2018 and full members of a Club affiliated to petitors will be required to show their membership cards.PROCEDUREThe Competition will consist of EIGHT games:Netball RelayPassing the BallSlalomTeam TagBeer Can ShyKeep Fitters Race Indoor CricketFrisbeeClubs must take part in all of the EIGHT games.Clubs can use the JOKER on a chosen game thereby doubling points obtained on that BALL RELAYEach team is to consist of FIVE members, THREE of whom must be of the opposite gender. Each member will, in turn, dribble a ball (bouncing the ball with one hand) down a slalom course and then shooting and scoring in the netball net. The ball is to be caught and dribbled back to the start line. Next member to start when he/she is holding the ball and previous member is behind the start line.PASSING THE BALLEach team is to consist of TEN members, FOUR of whom must be of the opposite gender. A large ball will be passed alternately over the head and between the legs to the person at the back of the team who then runs to the front and begins passing the ball over his/her head. The race continues until the original leader is back to his/her place at the front of the team.SLALOM RACEEach team is to consist of TEN members, FOUR of whom must be of the opposite gender. Teams will be required to undertake the following along a slalom course (both ways).F – First female to dribble a football BOTH WAYSM – First male to dribble a hockey ball BOTH WAYSM – Second male to hop on one leg BOTH WAYSM&F – Third male to give second female a wheelbarrow BOTHWAYSM – Fourth male to roll a car tyre BOTHWAYSF – Third female to roll a car tyre BOTHWAYSF or M – Any member to hop in a sack BOTHWAYSF&M – Fourth female to give fifth male a wheelbarrow BOTHWAYSTEAM TAGEach team is to consist of THREE males and THREE females. Teams are to line up behind their leaders. On the whistle, the first person runs to the far wall, runs back and joins hands with the second person in the team. Without braking hands they both run to the far wall, run back and pick up the third person. This continues until all the lines have joined hands and run. The first team back wins. If a team breaks hands, they are disqualified.NOTE: Do not let the first person begin too quickly as he/she has all the running to do.BEER CAN SHYEach team is to consist of EIGHT members, THREE of whom must be of the opposite gender.Seven cans will be placed down the centre of the hall.Seven members will be at point A; the 8th member at point B will field and retrieve the ball. A batsman shall have ONE good bowl to him/her. The bat should be held in two hands. The batter receives a bowl from the bowler (who is stood approximately 6m away) and attempts to hit it. If he/she HITS or MISSES it, they MUST run around a skittle at square leg at four metres away – carrying the bat. The bowler keeps bowling at the stumps regardless of whether the batter is back or not. Once the batter is back in the batting square (either bodily or touching it with the bat) no more bowls can be bowled at the stumps.No-BallsA ball that is not within the reach of the batsman on his batting side, and is higher than the top of his/her shoulder or lower than the knees, shall be considered a no-ball. A ball bowled at such a pace as to put in danger the safety of the batsmen will also be considered a no ball.All balls must be delivered by an UNDERARM action from within the bowling square, and must reach the batsman without bouncing.Batsmen OutIf caught, unless the ball is a no-ball, note that the batsmen are out if they are caught two handed if the ball only hits the roof or one handed if the ball has only hit the wall. If the ball hits the roof and then a wall the batsman can still be caught out if the ball is caught one handed.If stumped at the batting areaIf the bowler delivers a bowl and hits the stumps whilst the batter is runningIf the bowler’s ball reaches the stumps with a good ball past the batterBatsmen are NOT OUT if stumped by fielder – the fielder must return ball to bowler for bowler to aim for wickets.Once OUT the next member of the team moves into the batting position.A soft ball (i.e. tennis ball) will be used in the interests of safety.FRISBEEEach team is to consist of THREE males and THREE females. One team to compete at a time. The team will have to do as many complete programmes (as set out below) as possible during a given time. The chairman will act as petitors will be provided with topics for discussion. This allows panel members to research topics and prepare factual background and comedic content. Competitors are NOT ALLOWED any notes or reminder cards when ‘on stage’.A panel will consist of four members, each drawn from a different club/team.The panel will be given one minute to speak on a given subject/topic.The panel will speak to a total of 4 topics before the scores are announced by the scorer.The four panellists are challenged to speak for one minute on a given subject without "repetition, hesitation, or deviation".Repetition - you must try not to repeat yourself. This is only within the given subject. If the subject is lost and you gain it back again you cannot repeat anything you said earlier. You can repeat what someone else has said and you can use any part of the subject as many times as you like. People do slip up on using plurals of a given word again and again however; which is different to the singular word. "Repetition" means the repetition of any word or phrase, although challenges based upon very common words such as "and" “is” “or” are generally rejected except in extreme cases. Words contained in the given subject are exempt unless repeated many times in quick succession. Skilful players use (sometimes obscure) synonyms in order to avoid repeating themselves. The term "BBC" can be successfully challenged for repetition of "B".Hesitation - can be difficult to judge, however if they say "erm" that should be a hesitation. It can be difficult when people breathe. But there is a difference between a breath and a longer pause. One place competitors slip up is pausing for laughter. That is hesitation."Hesitation" is watched very strictly: a momentary pause before resumption of the subject can give rise to a successful challenge, as can tripping over one's words. Even pausing during audience laughter or applause (known as "riding a laugh") is usually not permitted.Deviation – Is fairly simple apart from if it is an incorrect use of the grammar of a word or word within a subject it is a deviation from the given subject."Deviation" means deviating from the subject, but has also been interpreted as "deviating from the English language as we know it", "deviation from grammar as we understand it", deviating from the truth, and sometimes even logic, although often leaps into the surreal are allowed.Each of the competitors shall start a topic first. A draw shall be made to determine which order the panellists speak first on each of the 4 topics (e.g. number 1 to start the first topic 1st; number 2 to start the second topic 1st etc.).The time keeper starts the clock when the first panel member starts to speak. When a challenge is made the clock is stopped. The clock is re-started when the next speaker starts to speak. Time keeper blows a whistle when 60 seconds (one minute) has elapsed.Panellists should try to challenge the speaker for: Repetition, Hesitation or Deviation A panellist scores a point for making a correct challenge against whoever is speaking. The chairman (judge) will decide if the challenge is correct or not and will exercise the benefit of the doubt evenly.The speaker gets a point if the challenge is deemed incorrect and then resumes speaking on the subject/topic.If a witty interjection amuses the audience, even though it is not a correct challenge, at the chairman’s discretion, both the challenger and speaker may gain a point, the speaker then resumes speaking on the subject/topic.A panellist who makes a correct challenge takes over the subject for the remainder of the minute, or, until he or she is correctly challenged. The speaker also scores a point if they are the person speaking when the 60 seconds expires. If the speaker speaks for the whole minute without being interrupted or challenged, he/she gains an extra point. (1 point for speaking when whistle blows and 1 point for speaking for one whole minute without being interrupted or challenged).It is unusual for a speaker to speak within the three cardinal rules for any substantial length of time, whilst remaining coherent, and also being amusing. Therefore, to speak for the full minute without being challenged is a special achievement. TIMINGEach panel will speak for one minute for each of the 4 topics.SUMMARY OF MARKSA panellist scores a point for making a correct challenge against whoever is speaking.The speaker gets a point if the challenge is deemed incorrect.If a witty interjection amuses the audience, even though it is not a correct challenge, both the challenger and speaker may gain a point, at the chairman's discretion. (If you don’t wait to be asked and give a challenge – the chair might not agree that you were the first to challenge and you might give someone else the correct challenge)Ensure when you give your challenge – even if you aren’t sure you are correct be firm and confident and where you can give an example. Teams entered are responsible for producing a Risk Assessment that is adequate and suitable for all activities within the production.There are no marks awarded for the Risk Assessment but if it is not forthcoming by the deadline of 14 days before the competition, the Club / act will not be permitted to perform. The stage and theatre manager(s) hold the right, under these rules, to refuse an activity that does not meet current safety standards. The stage manager and theatre staff have full authority to stop a production that is not safe.All teams must abide by the Health & Safety and fire safety Regulations of the theatre. Further information can be found at Clubs may enter one team.ELIGIBILITY The minimum number of singers is eight (8) and the maximum is twenty (20), all of whom must be 26 years of age or under on 1st September 2018 and a full member of a Club affiliated to the petitors are required in person to produce on the day of the competition their current and signed Membership Card, with suitable photograph, or a fine of ?10 will be imposed for non-production.Choirmaster. If the teams so wish to have a conductor they must be within membership age (must be 26 years of age or under on 1st September 2018 and a full member of a Club affiliated to the CFYFC). The conductor would be in addition to the singers.Musical accompaniment. A maximum of one (1) member within membership age and holding a current membership card may be appointed to provide live musical accompaniment. This is in addition to the singers. Additional percussion instruments may be added by singers if wished.PROCEDURE The programmeA maximum of ten (10) minutes will be allotted for each group’s performance. This includes time for the conductor or nominated person to make a short introduction to the choir and music to be sung and any applause from the audience. Introduction to both pieces should be made at the beginning of the performance.Once the Choir is on stage, timing will start from the moment the first sound is made until the moment the last sound is finished. The programme should include a semi-directed piece and an own-choice piece.E.g.: The programme will consist of two pieces as detailed below. These MUST be accompanied and the quality of the accompaniment will only be considered in terms of the overall performance.Musical accompaniment, where required, may be provided by one musical instrument (e.g. piano or guitar) or by pre-recorded backing track. If providing music, do not present photocopied music unless written authorisation has been obtained from the publisher and can be produced if required.Please ensure, especially if making your own arrangements, that your choice does not contravene copyright laws: as a general rule, music where the last surviving composer/arranger/editor/librettist died more than 70 years ago is in the public domain, otherwise it is still in copyright – however, there are exceptions.Choirs should consider the following:Choirs should think carefully about the quality and range of the music and its suitability for young developing voices e.g. extremes of range can lead to forcing the vocal chords for volume. It is important that the pieces chosen are well suited to the voices, both in terms of the technical requirements, range, words and pitch.Choosing repertory is regarded by most conductors as the hardest and most important decision of all. If a conductor is in any doubt about the suitability of a piece under consideration, we recommend that they seek advice from experienced choir directors working with young people: try the local secondary school or sixth-form College. Organisations such as "Sing for Pleasure" may be able to help members keen on choral directing, one-off singing days or workshops may be worth investigating at Contrasting WorksThe own-choice work should show a clear contrast to Piece 1 in mood, style, period or a combination of these and other elements. The aim is to showcase your choir’s abilities to the full. Suggestions for finding arrangements: local music shops or ; . Physical Movement / ChoreographyThis is a choral competition, which will be judged on the criteria listed below. If a choir decides to use movement it should in no way undermine the quality of the choir’s singing. It should be visually tasteful and appropriate. Although choreography is not one of the listed criteria, movements which enhance the overall impression will be credited. Movement that undermines the quality of choral singing, however, will result in the loss of marks. Movement within the performance must not include lifts; all competitors must ensure both of their feet stay on the floor at all times.Choirs will be allocated a technical rehearsal time to include a sound check prior to the competition. Teams will be advised on this timetable prior to the event.Teams will be required to send a copy of any pre-recorded accompanying music on CD to county office fourteen days before the competition. Choirs may bring amplifiers for instruments but should note that sound checks may not be possible. The routine is to be between 3-5 minutes long and must contain four different dance genres.The Team must perform two genres from Ballroom, and two genres from Latin. The performance may have other genres involved in order to assist with the flow/sequencing of the performance. The performance is a ‘showdance’ so will have a specific ending. For this reason there will be no additional time for a Bow/Curtsey at the end of the performance.Props may be used, but the teams must provide them on the day – unless otherwise petitors to note that if including lifts in their routine they must be no more than 1? persons high (a member sitting on another members shoulders = 1? members high). To note that Power Point may be used as a visual aid for the Speaker but they are not to be used for the whole speech and can only be used to enhance the speech.
