a, BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Melchers vas a land.scape and portrait painter vho painted "The Arts of War" and "The Arts of Peace" for the Library of Congress. The two-story white frame house "Belmont" which is on a high ridge overlooking the Rappahannock River, was Melchers' home from 1916 until his death in 1932, It is owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia and is operated. by Mary Washington College,

b, BOUNDARIES: To reach :from Fredericksburg, take Route l toward Falmouth. After crossing the Rappahannock River make a left turn at very :first opportunity and. then drive back in direction of the river for approximately 50 feet; thence right on Washington Street for approximately 600 feet to Geri Melchers' house "Belmont."

The original portion of Belmont was erected around 1761 by John

Dixon of Williamsburg. In 1825 it was purchased by Joseph Ficklin of

Stafford County, who enlarged the central portion of the dwelling and

added a wing. Ownership of Belmont remained with the Ficklin family

until the house was purchased by Gari Melchers the famous American

artist.

The imposing frame structure, with its beautiful grounds and

commanding position, serves as an architectural focal point for the historic COl\llllunity of Falmouth. Also, Belmont's association with Gari

Melchers has made the house an important cultural landmark.
