Learning Target: Students will learn what a coping skill is and practice how to

use them.

Background: This is review 1st grade lesson from our monthly counseling lessons

Students learn to identify life changes or events in Kindergarten.

Students recognize the effects of life changes and events related to themselves in 1st grade.

What is a coping skill?

A coping skill is something you do that helps you when you have a tough feeling or thought.

There 4 different types of coping skills Calming

Distracting Physical

Processing

We are going to focus on calming strategies today!

Practice #1: Coping skills song Sing along with me! The tune is to "wheels on the bus"

1. First, listen to the coping skills. 2. Then play it again and Sing along!

Practice #2: Shape breathing Trace your finger along the shape and practice breathing

Practice #3: Get moving! Sometimes our body need to move to calm down

Do 10 jumping jacks Do 10 push ups Repeat!
