JRBA 2019 MISSIONS BLITZ BUILDING PROJECTS
We are hoping to begin a few projects in our community in early October. There has not been anything nailed down yet, but watch for information in the coming days. I will send out an email once I need volunteers. Several churches have already sent very generous donations. We will really be able to make a difference in our community with those resources. Thank you all for your patience and willingness to help make a difference to those in need.
Also, thank you to those churches who have already reached out and done projects on their own to help others in Jesus’s name.
In His Service,
Mike
Rev. Michael Khol, Moderator

Sharon joined forces with Antioch Union and Glenmore UMC to provide monetary contributions and manpower for roof repairs to a home in the community. P. W. Kitchen headed up the work force.
First Baptist Dillwyn has carried out several projects:
1. A member replaced a bathroom floor for a family in need. Helping Hands provided for the supplies for the project.
2. FBC collected funds for Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief on September 8 and 15. These funds will help in relief work in The Bahamas and along the eastern coast as they recuperate from Hurricane Dorian.
3. FBC plans to carry out a letter writing project in October and has donated to the Missions Blitz Projects.
On Saturday, September 21, Jones Chapel members provided lunch
for a group of Habitat for Humanity volunteers who were building a home

saving and collecting their change in “water bottles” for the HOPE for Appalachia
and the Operation Christmas Child projects, collecting hats and gloves, etc. for the
fall trip, and are collecting for the Alma Hunt Mission Offering throughout the month of
September. Some of the choir members and church family visited Heritage Hall on August 28,
to sing and fellowship with the residents there. A blessed time was had by all.

Mulberry Grove’s major focus in September was the Alma Hunt Offering for state missions. Individuals continue to volunteer at the bi-monthly food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral, and the outreach ministry is ongoing. There will be several areas of emphasis in October. Individuals will be involved with the large JRBA building projects. The church will be collecting hats, gloves, coats, and blankets for Hope for Appalachia, and members will be working on the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.
A member of Sharon assisted with local Blue Ridge food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral. Current efforts are focused on the annual Alma Hunt Offering, and collecting warm, winter outerwear for Hope for Appalachia. Rose of Sharon WMU continues visiting with, and delivering meals to, those who are sick or home-bound.

Sunday School Report
Our Association was greatly blessed by the Sunday School Training led by Tony Brooks at First Baptist Dillwyn on September 10. Thanks to the 44 persons from 10 of our churches who attended the conference. Let us all put into action the ideas Tony shared about reaching prospects, teaching principles, building relationships, etc. in Sunday School.

JRBA Sunday School Training Conference
Rev. Tony Brooks, BGAV Sunday School/Discipleship Specialist, led the training held at First Baptist Dillwyn, on Tuesday, September 10, 2019. Forty-four participants from 10 JRBA churches were given lots of strategies to enhance teaching and many ideas for growing their church’s Sunday School.
Tony spent some time talking about what Sunday School is, why we have it, and how it should be done. The “what” and “how” are meant to support “why” we have Sunday School. Sunday School is first and foremost for the purpose of Discipleship and Evangelism. Discipleship is based on Matthew 22:36-40:
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus
replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all
your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest
commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as
yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments.”
Evangelism is based on Matthew 28:19-20:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Sunday School equips us to follow these commandments. It offers the opportunity to learn and know God better and it teaches us to share our faith. Sunday School has long been the outreach arm of the church – a tool to disciple Christians and to reach out into our communities with care and the Gospel, ultimately building His Kingdom.
There are many ways to “do” Sunday School” and our traditional 10:00 AM classes at the church may not be as effective in our current culture.
We need to recognize the demographics of our community and what is needed. Perhaps Sunday School needs to be at a different time, or even a different place. (Homes, nursing homes, etc. – Bible Study can take place anytime, anyplace.) If folks in our communities are working on Sunday morning, there is a need to have Bible Study in small groups at some other time. Depending on the type of unchurched folks we find by canvassing our community, we may need to host Sunday School in our homes or at another place. We need to be open to the idea of “going out” rather than expecting them to “come in”.
Tony also talked about the role of Sunday School teachers as missionaries and disciple-makers. He stressed the following four ways a teacher can spiritually prepare to teach:
1. Spend time with God daily.
2. Pray for your class daily. (By name)
3. Follow up the lesson. (Learning=Change in Attitude & Behavior)
4. Prepare for the next week.
If a teacher is not prepared, how can he/she challenge others? Find a way to reach out to your class members during the week – Phone Calls, Facebook, Texting, or Emails. Ask questions that weren’t asked on Sunday because of time constraints - give them a “teaser” about the upcoming lesson – ask for prayer requests – remind them you’re looking forward to seeing them in Sunday School. Caring for your learners is crucial. Using Care Groups is one way for class members to stay connected and to reach prospects. Select a Leader for each group and assign them 4 – 5 members and prospects. You shouldn’t have a “class roll”, you should have a “ministry care list”!
Sunday School teachers need to bring creativity to the classroom. The teacher needs to consider the learning style of the learners. Some folks learn physically (doing), musically (include music at all levels), visually (pictures, etc.), reflectively (some silence), relationally (care groups), verbally (opportunity to respond to questions), logically, or naturally (be outside in God’s creation). As the teacher, you need to motivate your students by being ready (have a question up when folks arrive in order to start on time), look at the spiritual truths of the Bible passage, and be sure to give life application. If students don’t learn to apply what they have studied, you have not succeeded as a teacher.
Healthy Sunday School groups should have a social event at least once a quarter. And every Sunday School class should be involved in an ongoing outreach project (nursing home, adopt a school, service personnel, etc.).
Churches should have a Sunday School Outreach Person who keeps track of prospects in the community. Use every opportunity to get information on prospects – host events where folks register for door prizes! Ideas: Baptist Cares (carry homemade cookies/jelly to folks in the neighborhood), Neighborhood Cookout, Pancake Supper, Photo with Santa, Parents Day Out, Veterans Day Event, Grocery Store Children’s Story Hour, Men’s Breakfast, Women’s Brunch, Beast Feast (for hunters), Children’s Coloring Contest, Car Maintenance, Fall Festivals, Free Haircuts, Sports Clinics or Camps, etc. Everyone in Sunday School needs to be inviting others. Perhaps a Sunday School Competition would encourage folks to invite and bring others.
Tony is an enthusiastic believer in the importance of Sunday School in the life of the church, in discipleship, in outreach, and in building the Kingdom! For churches that had no one in attendance, a copy of his handouts have been mailed to your Sunday School Director with the hope that all Sunday School teachers will receive a copy. If you would like to receive Tony’s blog (a couple of times a month), please email him at tony.brooks@.
Tony recommended the following books:
1. Start with Why – Simon Sinek (Amazon or )
2. Breathing Life into Sunday School – Ken Braddy (Lifeway)
3. Why Men Hate Going To Church – Thom Rainer ( or Ebay)
Recommended videos:
1. Google “The Dentist” by Tim Conway to view on You Tube.
2. Google “Know Your Why” by Michael Jr. to view on You Tube.
Let’s see how Tony’s ideas are put into practice – be sure to share what you do and how it succeeds!

OTHER EVENTS>>>

IN APPRECIATION>>>
JRBA,
My time has arrived! By the time you read this, I’ll be serving the people of Honduras. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for the financial support you gave to make this life changing trip possible. Thank you for investing in me for the Kingdom’s sake. Please continue to pray for the Honduran people. Pray for healing, pray that they will come to know the Lord through us, and pray for peace in this beautiful country. Thousands of lives are about to forever be changed (including mine) because of your selfless donation and prayers. I can’t wait to come home and share my stories of love and hope with you all. What an amazing testimony it will be. Continue to pray for my team’s protection as we serve and my sweet family that is patiently waiting for my return home! May God bless you as you have me!

I would like to personally thank you for the monetary contribution towards my medical mission trip. We helped almost 1,000 people get well-needed care. I came home with a big piece of Honduras in my heart. I would love to give another presentation to tell about my experience.
Thank you.

JRBA CELEBRATES>>>
Shayne McAllister made a profession of faith at Chestnut Grove’s VBS while visiting his grandparents, Pam and Don Bragg. Pastor Roger Woody had the privilege to baptize him on Sunday, September 8, with his parents and grandparents at the Chickamauga Dam in Chattanooga, TN. Praise God!
Chestnut Grove extends congratulations to Kasey and Adam Jamerson on the birth of their second son, Malcolm Miles Jamerson, born September 6. Becky and Kenny Morris are the proud grandparents.
First Baptist Dillwyn ordained Ryan Burnett as a new deacon on Sunday, September 22. Ryan and his wife, Kelly, and daughters, Savannah and Lindsey, recently joined FBC and are blessing the church in wonderful ways.
In special recognition of Barbara Rush Boley, Sharon recently hosted a celebratory reception to express love and appreciation for her 30 years of exemplary service as Church Sexton. Barbara and her late husband, Paul, took over the responsibility of Sexton in 1985 after her mother retired from the job she had done for years with her husband, Barbara’s father. A lifelong member of Sharon, Barbara has served her church in many capacities over the years and has certainly earned a well-deserved break. No only was she present every time the church doors were open, but she was the one to open them, make sure everything was in order and comfortable, and then cleaned up after all of the events and celebrations! Sharon says a hearty, THANK YOU, Barbara!

FROM YOUR MODERATOR>>>
Two years ago I began my term as Moderator of the JRBA; it is crazy how time flies and how many things have taken place in that time period. During that time, the LORD has really been at work in our association! I am constantly amazed at how 18, uniquely gifted churches, could come together to do so much. The LORD has brought us together and we have been able to do so much more because of this relationship. As Marilyn assumes her duties as Moderator for the next two years, I look forward to working with her as she leads our association in His work.
As I look back at what we have done since my last report, two things from the BGAV stand out:
1. The John Upton luncheon turned out to be a great turnout. I want to reiterate my thanks to everyone who was a part of making that a blessing. Not only was it an informative meeting about the workings of the BGAV, but the fellowship of churches could not have been a sweeter thing to behold.
2. Also the Sunday School Conference led by Tony Brooks was absolutely convicting and enlightening. This was also well attended and represented by our different churches. I was particularly blessed by the idea of teaching (preaching in my case) using different learning methods/styles. I look forward to many more of these types of gatherings. Jimmy, thank you for getting the SS conference put together.
Our building projects were rescheduled for October, so as I write this report I do not have much to say on the topic, but hopefully, as we gather for the Annual Meeting, I will be able to give a much fuller report. I have really enjoyed these types of projects and am sure that whatever ends up being done will be accomplished in a great spirit of fellowship and cooperation. Thanks again, JRBA, for all that you do.
I conclude by challenging each of us to really buy into what the LORD is doing in our local churches and association as a whole. It is such a blessing to be able to serve the LORD, and to be able to stand alongside some of God’s people as we do this together is a particular treat. God is at work, we just have to open our eyes and see what we can do to be a part of this great thing. Thank you all for your continued prayers and unfailing service. I look forward to what God has in store for JRBA and commit to praying for its leadership in the coming year.
Love in JC,
Michael
