3687283-255182Dear Families,WELCOME TO 2nd GRADE!!! My name is Ms. Glen and I am so excited to have your child in my class this year. It is going to be a great year full of fun and lots of learning. Here are some of the classroom policies that will be implemented during our time together. Please indicate that you have reviewed the information by signing the last page and returning it to me in your child’s HORSE Binder (Take-Home Binder) as soon as possible. If you have ANY questions please feel free to contact me!*Phone: 703-957-4480*Email: amy.obertubbesing@ (you may notice my last name is different on my e-mail. Glen happens to be my middle name, but I use it as my last name for ease! Don’t worry, you won’t have to pronounce Ms. Obertubbesing!)*Or send a note in your child’s HORSE Binder.Classroom Management SystemIn our class, every child has a clip with their name written on it. They will start out each day with their clip on the green section of our behavior system chart. The goal is for each child to keep their clip on green for good behavior or to move it up to blue for exceptional (“Wow!”) behavior. However, if a child does not follow classroom rules, he or she will be asked to move their clip down the chart to another color with a corresponding consequence. The colors on the chart break down like this:Blue – “Wow!” Excellent behavior, a super example for others, above and beyond!Green – “Great!” Standard appropriate behavior, followed all rules and expectations.Yellow – “Uh Oh” Received warnings with no change in behavior problem.Red – “” Behavior continues, endangering others or preventing normal classroom activity. These colors will be filled in each day by your child in their agenda calendar so you will always know how their day went. The positive side of this plan is that every child’s clip starts out each day on green and they have the opportunity to move it up to blue. Positive behavior will be rewarded with tickets. Once your child reaches 10 tickets, he or she will be able to take a trip to the “treasure bucket,” or they may choose a non-tangible reward such as lunch in the classroom. Your child will be responsible for their own tickets. Any that are lost, etc. will not be replaced. In addition to earning tickets, students will work together each week to earn, “team tallies.” Teamwork is EXTREMELY important in our classroom. I have very high expectations that 2nd graders can work together, be kind to one another, and support each other as a team. We will emphasize this daily through classroom meetings and I’d greatly appreciate your encouragement of these social skills at home.Positive Behavior Support (PBIS)Creighton’s Corner Elementary participates in a positive behavior support program! The pillars of our P.B.I.S. program are:Respect YourselfRespect OthersRespect Your SchoolThe students have the opportunity to earn a “Colt’s Compliment” for following the school’s rules of Respect! Please congratulate your child for a job well done when they receive these accomplishments! Within our classroom, the students will have plenty of opportunities to get “caught” doing something good! When they are “caught”, they will receive a hole-punch on their card. When their card is full, they may redeem it for a small reward, and they will bring the completed card home to celebrate with their family!Homework PolicyHomework is an important and necessary aspect of education. The federal law, No Child Left Behind, states that there are four types of homework: Practice, Preparation, Extension, and Integration. Our class will have practice homework on a daily basis. Extension and integration opportunities will be provided throughout the year. The study guides and homework helpers section of the Take-Home Binder (HORSE Binder) will be used for preparation. The students will be transitioned into the second grade homework schedule. The beginning of the class /homework routine is as follows:Week 1: “Me-Bag” (to be presented and displayed in class).Week 2: Daily math assignments will begin. (Only on Mondays and Wednesdays)Week 3: Math assignments continue. (M,W) Word Study homework will begin. There will be a few take-home projects beginning the 2nd half of the school year.*Absentee class work and homework will be on the student’s desk when they return to school.AbsencesIn order to ensure your child does not miss any important academic instruction, please make sure he/she is at school on time each day. If your child does need to be absent please inform the school by calling 703-957-4481. If your child will be absent for a trip, a letter must be sent to Mr. Knott at least one week ahead, in order for him to determine if the absences are excused or not. Class work and homework will be ready for your child when they return from their absence. I will allow the same number of days missed to make up the work. (Example: If child misses 2 days, they will have 2 days to return missed work.)Additional InformationHORSE Binders:The students will use their HORSE Binders to keep their materials in proper order.
