6th Grade Math 2009 – 2010

7th Grade Math 2018 – 2019Email: valerie.smith@cms.k12.nc.us Website: to Ms. Smith’s 7th Grade Math. This school year we will use several resources including but not limited to Google Classroom, Discovery Education Techbook, Connected Mathematics 2 textbook, Socrative, Schoology, Compass Learning, IXL, CANVAS, SAS Curriculum Pathways, Desmos, Open-Up and various other curriculum resources. Students will have online access to all of our resources. Discovery Education Techbook is an electronic resource and Connected Mathematics 2 is a traditional textbook that is also available online. Both are problem-centered and use an inquiry-based instructional model. They are designed to: develop deep understanding of key mathematical ideas, reasoning, and skills, substantially raise the level of mathematical thinking and reasoning of students. promote long-term retention of mathematical concepts, processes, and skills. Technology: Students must bring their fully charged chrome books to class every day. We will be using these on a regular basis and will be doing a lot of work online. Students will need access to Google Classroom, classroom videos, assignment files, and websites as well as the ability to store/retrieve files via Google drive. We will be using all of these on a daily basis. It would extremely benefit your child if they are able to access these same resources at home but will need internet access in order to do so. While some files can be printed and given to those who do not have internet access, they will not be able to access classroom videos, stored Google drive files, websites, etc., without the internet. It is also imperative that students have ear buds or headphones as many activities and assignments require sound.Curriculum Overview: We will cover several content areas this year. We will begin with a review of computation using decimals and fractions. I cannot stress the importance of these two fundamental skills. A thorough understanding of fractions, in particular will be necessary all throughout high school and college math classes. The content areas include: Ratios and Proportions: proportional comparisons, unit rates, percents, scale drawings, and similar triangles. Number Sense: computation with decimals, fractions, integers, and order of operations. Statistics and Probability: central tendencies (mean, median, mode, range, and mean absolute deviation), and probability. Expressions and Equations: simplifying expressions, combining like terms, distributive property, solving equations/inequalities, and graphing. Geometry: perimeter, area, composite/irregular figures, volume, surface area, angles You can find more detailed information about the 7th grade math curriculum and standards on my website. Steps to Success in 7th grade math: Come to class prepared with all of your materials and a willingness to learn. Use class time wisely. Take thorough notes that will enable you to complete the homework. Review your notes plete ALL assignments showing all steps of your work. No work, no credit! Be sure to ask questions in class. Don’t be afraid to seek help.Retry any missed exercises within a day or two to prove to yourself that you have mastered the material.Grades: I maintain an up-to-date online gradebook through PowerSchool Pro. Missing assignments will have a grade of zero entered immediately and will be updated when the assignment is received. You will have online access to your child’s grades and missing assignments via the Parent Portal of Power School Pro. I encourage you to check the site often to stay abreast of how your child is doing in all of their classes. Grade Weights: 65% - Formal (major assessments, Projects, etc.) 35% - Informal (graded classwork, quizzes, investigations, worksheets, warm-ups, spiral curriculum assignments, collaborative group work, and homework) Grading Scale:90 - 100%A (Excellent) 80 - 89%B (Above Average/Satisfactory) 70 - 79%C (Average/Acceptable) 60 - 69%D?(Below Average/Needs Improvement) 0 - 59%F??(Failing/Unsatisfactory) Student Work: To receive credit, student work must meet the following criteria (we will go over these extensively in class to get students acclimated): 1)include student name and date2) neat and legible 3) in pencil, work shown 4) final answers highlighted, circled, or boxed 5) full effort put into the assignment 6) complete / attempt all assigned problems. Students that submit work that does not meet the criteria listed above will be asked to redo the assignment for credit. If a student has to repeat an assignment more than once, it will be considered late. Each student will be required to keep and maintain a 5-subject notebook for math class. Notebooks will contain a Table of Contents indicating what is in the notebook. Each Table of Contents entry should include the date and a page number. All pages in the notebook will be numbered, contain a heading and the date. We will set up our notebooks during the 1st week of school. Students will keep notes, handouts, exit tickets, and various other items in their notebook. You should be able to ask your child for their notebook at any time to get a feel for what we’re doing in class. Students will maintain a 1-subject notebook for daily warm-ups. Spiral curriculum assignments will be ongoing, weekly assignments and will assist students in reviewing fundamental skills that are critical in the developmental understanding and application of mathematics.Homework: Homework can be graded for completion and/or accuracy. Homework is given to ensure students understand the concept(s) we worked on in class. I generally give homework each class and go over it the next class. This is helpful so students can assess whether they need additional instruction. Because of this, I ONLY accept LATE homework the very next class for PARTIAL CREDIT (maximum 50%). Homework must be written in pencil, have all work shown, and include an attempt on all assigned problems, to receive credit. Please help your child by checking their homework nightly. In addition, students should study notes and vocabulary each night. The use of books, trustworthy websites, parents and supplemental resources are encouraged. Formal Assessments: Assessments will be announced well in advance. Quizzes may or may not be announced ahead of time. Students who do not make at least an 80, have the option to retest within 2 weeks of the original assessment date. The maximum retest grade is an 80. Retest must be completed before or after school in a HELP session. Retest cannot be completed during class time. Late and Absent/Make-up Work: Any work not turned in when the teacher collects it is considered late, and will receive partial credit (maximum of 50%) when it is turned in. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and turn in make-up work if you are absent. If you are absent the day of a scheduled test you will need to make the test up during a before or after school HELP session within 5 school days. Taking a makeup test during class would result in you missing the current lesson and getting further behind. If you are absent the day of a quiz, you will be exempt from the quiz. I do not make up quizzes. If you are absent when homework is assigned you will have five class days upon your return to turn in the work for FULL CREDIT. Work turned in after the 5 class days deadline will follow the late work policy. Any work that was due on the day of your absence will need to be turned in the day you return, otherwise it will be considered late. The cut off for acceptance of late work within each quarter is as follows: 1st Qtr. – Oct. 23, 2nd Qtr. – Jan. 10, 3rd Qtr. – March 21, 4th Qtr. – May 24. Work that is not completed in a given quarter will receive a 0%. Extra Help: I will be available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8 AM for students needing help. Ms. Wilson will also have sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons until 5:15 PM. Students not picked up on time will not be allowed to stay after. Students should come prepared with any questions and/or problems that they need assistance with. It is important that students keep up with the material in class and seek extra help when needed so that they don’t fall behind. Extra Credit: Extra credit opportunities are only given to the whole-class, and will not be given on an individual basis. The best way to improve your grade is to attend the Help sessions regularly, turn in all assignments on time, and take advantage of retest opportunities. Honor Code: Cheating of any form will not be tolerated. Consequences of cheating are an immediate zero for all parties involved and parental notification. Forms of cheating include copying homework papers, talking during an assessment or quiz, turning in someone else’s work as your own, sharing calculators on assessments or quizzes, using unauthorized electronic devices to share information with others, etc.. My website is a great source for general classroom information, helpful links, and resources to help students be successful. You can access my website by going to the Faculty and Staff section of our school website or directly via the web address .
