Grading

A. Grades are earned by student to document mastery of course content, skills, standards.

B. Rubrics will be provided to guide students for performance based assignments.

C. Marking period grades will be determined according to the following approximate percentages:

90% = class assignments, projects, work in the preschool, child development notebook, class participation, tests, quizzes, and drills (Note: A case study report is a major project/grade for second semester.)

10% = homework

To receive a minimum grade of 50% on an assessment, a student must make a sincere good faith effort, as determined by The teacher, to meet the basic requirements. If a student does no work on an assessment, the student will earn a grade of zero.

On key assignments, the student will have one additional option to redo assignments to demonstrate mastery. To qualify for the higher reassessment grade, the student must have completed and submitted the original assignment by the due date and must have participated in a teacher-facilitated reteaching during plus period or after school within five days following the return of the assignment.

D. Students will receive points on the above assessments. Total points earned divided by total points possible will determine the marking period grade according to the county grading policy of

90 – 100% A Excellent mastery of standards is evident.

80 – 89% B Advanced mastery of standards is evident.

70 – 79% C Acceptable, average mastery of standards is evident.

60 – 69% D Partial mastery of standards is evident.

0 – 59% E Minimal or no mastery of standards is evident.

E. High School semester grades are determined by averaging three weighted letter grades.

Marking Period = 40%

Marking Period = 40%

Final Exam = 20%

F. Adhere to Old Mill’s academic integrity policy.

G. Be prepared with all required materials and assignments on time.

(Assignments will not be accepted after three periods past the due date. The outside date for late work to be submitted shall be five school days from the original due date. Note: One class period late = 10% reduction in grade. Two class periods late = 20% reduction in grade. Three class periods late = 50% reduction in grade.)

H. School tardy (which includes tardy table procedures) and absence policies will be strictly enforced. Be aware that these policies can affect your grade and whether you receive credit. A student who is illegally absent will be allowed to make up work but will receive no credit for the work. In addition, a student who is absent six or more days during a semester is considered excessively absent and may be denied credit.

Homework

Homework is assigned on a regular basis.

All work should be attempted and completed to the best of the student’s ability. Homework is posted in the classroom each day under the “Homework” sign. It is the student’s responsibility to record the homework in their agenda.

How Parents/Guardians Can Help

A. Review the course syllabus and talk with your child throughout the year about what he/she is learning in class.

B. Help your child meet deadlines for important assignments and projects.

C. Share your comments, questions, and concerns with the teacher. Communication is encouraged by notes, emails, telephone calls, and/or conferences. With emails, please include your child’s name in the subject line.

D. Families are encouraged to sign-up for ParentConnect to access information on a student’s grades and attendance. On plus period days, a student may also request a printed progress sheet with grades. The teacher will also send home a printed progress sheet when a student is in danger of failing a marking period or dropping the equivalent of two letter grades.

E. If your family has financial challenges, which affect getting class supplies, please let the teacher know right away so that she can help with a solution.

Please allow a 24 hour school day to accommodate requests for make-up work that will be picked up.
