Single Camera Formats: Genres

Introduction:

Throughout this essay, I will be discussing my knowledge of the various types of genres in both film and television production. Genre is known as a style/category of art, music or literature; these different categories use genres in many ways to get a massage across to the audience e.g. themes and story telling.

Comedy: Comedy is one of the most well-known/popular genres to date. Comedy is used to make the audience laugh and give more enjoyment to the film/television series. Comedy can be combined alongside other genres such as: Action, Horror, Romance, Fantasy etc... Not only is Comedy popular in the film industry but it’s very popular in the TV industry also, Humor is used through these series for the main purpose of entertainment and laughter.

Horror: Horror Genre has a massive fan base; it’s one of the most popular genres in the industry. Horror is intended to frighten or scare viewers by inducing feelings of horror and terror. Horror can include different sub genres including zombies, slashers, monsters and Paranormal etc... Horror has recently became popular in the TV industry with high demands from viewers to include it in television, some extremely popular TV shows were created e.g. American Horror Story, Walking Dead and Bates Motel.

Fantasy and Adventure – Fantasy and Adventure genre are two of the most popular genres to collaborate together, Adventure genre is a fiction in which an adventure, an exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger, forms the main storyline, and Whilst Fantasy is a genre that uses magic or supernatural elements as the theme or setting in TV/film, it can use magical creatures and imaginary worlds also. Sci-Fi can also be combined with Fantasy and Adventure films such as The Hobbit and Harry Potter are great examples of using all three. Fantasy/Adventure has become a big part in TV industry as the world’s leading popular TV show uses the genres e.g. Game of Thrones.

Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) – Science Fiction also known as “Sci-Fi” is another popular genre in TV/Film. Science fiction is a speculative fiction dealing with imaginative concepts/ sub genres such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes and extraterrestrial life. Sci-Fi is also popular in television shows e.g. Star Trek and Lost Girl. Examples of the genre Sci-Fi in Film and TV –

Star Wars (1975 – 2015 Aliens (1979-2012)

Star Trek (1966 – 1969) Lost Girl (2010-16)

Action - Action film is a film genre in which one or more heroes are thrust into a series of challenges that typically include physical feats, extended fight scenes, violence, and frantic chases. It’s a popular genre in both TV/Film industries, Sub genres that over-lap with action are Sci-Fi and Horror etc... Some of the most famous actions of all time include James Bond and Terminator. However, action isn’t as popular in the TV industry but they are a few TV series that take on the action genre including Dare Devil and Agent Carter.

Romance/Drama – Romance is one of the most popular genres to date, this type of genre fiction place their primary focus on the relationship and romantic love between two people, and must have an emotional “happy ending” where they can both be with each other. A subgenre that usually is combined with romance is comedy also known as “Rom-Coms”. These films are seen to be quite popular with humor and romance it has best of both worlds for the audience. Drama is also another subgenre that is collaborated with romance, as the main characters have to deal with certain life problems and situations that may stop them from being together. Romance/Drama is very common in TV series such as Grey’s Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother.
