Dear parents/guardians:
Your child is enrolled in a basic level course in geometry. Upon completion of the class with a grade of C or better, your student may go on to Foundations of Algebra 2
Curriculum
Textbook: McDougal Littell Geometry, Concepts and Skills Online Textbook Resourse:
We will cover a chapter in the geometry book approximately every 3 weeks. Students will be given an individual or group quiz and an individual test each unit. There will be a department midterm and final each semester.
During the first semester we will be covering these topics: basic geometry terms, segments/angles, parallel/perpendicular lines, triangle relationships, triangle congruency properties, and quadrilaterals.
In the second semester we will cover basic similarity, polygons, area/volume, basic trigonometry, and circle properties.
Extra Help
My classroom will be open daily for tutoring before school from 7:00-7:25. I am also available at other times by appointment.
Materials
The following materials should be brought to class each day:
1. pencil—work in pen is not accepted and will be returned to the student to be rewritten in pencil
2. scientific calculator
3. lined paper
4. graph paper
5. Notes
6. Handouts/Agenda printed off my webpage for each chapter
How to be successful in Geometry:
1. Come to class prepared with your materials
2. Finish your class work and turn it in every day
3. Complete your homework and remember to put it in your notebook
4. Listen!! (this one is really important!)
5. Be helpful to your partner and group
6. Come in for extra help when you need it—don’t wait until the morning of the test
7. Study your notes and reviews for tests!
Grading
Grades will be based on the following:
1. 15% classwork/notes
2. 10% homework
3. 25% benchmark/quizzes (points will vary) **may be retaken outside of class time to improve score
4. 50% tests (including a midterm and final exam each semester)
Tests and quizzes count for approximately 75% of the total grade with all other categories combining for the other 25%. I grade on a straight percentage scale (an A is 90-100%, B is 80-89%, C is 70-79%, D is 60-69%). However, at the end of the semester, if a student is at 88%, 78%, 68%, or 58% and he/she has a 90% or above in homework, the grade will be raised to the next higher grade.
Homework
Homework will be given almost every night (even on weekends!) and is due the next class. Good attendance is vital in every class, but it is especially important in math. If your student is absent, he or she will be expected to check their assignment sheet and turn in the makeup work within one week of an excused absence. Please understand that work is expected on the due date. A good way to see if the homework is being completed is to check your child’s agenda against their work for that day. Agendas will be posted on my school webpage.
Class Rules
1. Be respectful of your classmates, teacher, and classroom.
2. No electronic devices in class. Cell phones should be on silent and out of sight. Confiscated items can be picked up at the Security Office.
3. No eating, drinking, or gum chewing in class (water is OK).
4. Be on time (consequences will be given in accordance with school policy).
5. Be prepared. I do not loan out pencils or paper.
Bathroom Passes
Students should take care of their personal needs during their break and lunch. Four bathroom passes per semester are allowed for “emergencies” only. Use them wisely—there are 18 weeks in a semester!
