ALASKA ASSOCIATION OF MUNICIPAL CLERKS 54th Annual Athenian, Academy and Conference November 16 ? 19, 2019 Hotel Captain Cook ? Anchorage, Alaska

August 6, 2019

Dear AAMC Members and Interested Guests:

I am pleased to invite you to the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks (AAMC) 54th Annual Conference! This wonderful educational and networking opportunity will be held November 16-19, 2019 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, Alaska.

The theme for this year's conference is Fly Beyond Your Comfort Zone! Taking a risk and stepping outside our comfort zone is scary and often makes us feel anxious. Believe me, I get it! However, I encourage you to remember some of the best things happen outside our comfort zone; amazing opportunities that challenge us and help us grow.

The AAMC committees have put in a tremendous amount of work to bring us a fantastic lineup of sessions and events. I am excited to announce a special learning opportunity this year - an Athenian Dialogue! Stephanie D. Smith, City Clerk of the City of Murrieta, CA and current President for the California City Clerks Association, will facilitate a conversation on the book Year of Yes. And, we have another treat in store for our full-day Academy. Matt Booth, internationally known attitude expert, will provide us with some tools for our toolbox related to goal setting, communicating, and staying positive. Matt was the keynote speaker for this year's IIMC Conference in Birmingham. He was phenomenal! Ok, I could go on and on about the session lineup, but you get the hint. A fun and wonderful experience full of learning opportunities awaits you!

Enclosed you will find information on travel and hotel, the Athenian, Academy, Education Sessions, and special evening events. You may register for the conference using the attached registration form or you may register on our website at:

Don't forget to take advantage of the early registration discount for AAMC Members. On behalf of the AAMC Executive Board and committees we look forward to seeing you in November! Please don't hesitate to call me if you have questions. I can be reached at 907-747-1811 or email: sara.peterson@.

Athenian Dialogue

Saturday, November 16, 2019 9:00 a.m.--3:30 p.m., Hotel Captain Cook

Please join us for this special learning opportunity!

Dialogues are conversations that go beyond the usual knowledge recall and application process familiar to all municipal clerks in training seminars. They are unique because they explore leadership principles and practice,

drawing on the insights contained in a book that all participants have read.

ABOUT THE BOOK The talented creator of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder chronicles how saying YES for one year changed her life--and how it can change yours too. With three hit shows on television and three children at home, Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say NO when an unexpected invitation arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No. And there was the side-benefit of saying No for an introvert like Shonda: nothing new to fear. Then Shonda's sister laid down a challenge: just for one year, try to say YES to the unexpected invitations that come your way. Shonda reluctantly agreed--and the result was nothing short of transformative. In Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes chronicles the powerful impact saying yes had on every aspect of her life--and how we can all change our lives with one little word. Yes.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR Stephanie D. Smith, City Clerk of the City of Murrieta, is a Master Municipal Clerk and serves on the Executive Board of the City Clerk's Association of California. She has nearly 30 years of experience in local government, and has worked for the cities of Paramount, Perris, Lake Forest, and Murrieta. Stephanie holds a Bachelor's Degree in Management and is a 30th Anniversary Year graduate of the Leadership Program through Continuing Education for Public Officials, and is also a graduate of the CEPO Training for Trainers Program. Stephanie is the author of over 150 published articles on a variety of topics including workplace change initiatives, personnel issues, business management, work/life balance, and financial planning. Stephanie is the past President of the Southern California-Inland Empire Chapter of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA), and is a member of the Municipal Management Association of Southern California and Women Leading Government.
