RF R

F,

RunFest, run fast, run fun! I am excited to kick o this

weekend at the Anchorage Run Fest.

Anchorage has world-class trails and scenery. Whether you are

running the marathon, half marathon, 5K, or cheering on your kids

at the 2K, know that you are part of the vast Anchorage running

community.

ank you to the Anchorage Running Club, race organizers, and

the volunteers who make this event possible.

Good luck!

Regards,

Ethan Berkowitz Mayor of Anchorage

A message from the race director

W

We have a new name and a new

look, but the Anchorage RunFest is still the

same amazing event that continues to be the

Anchorage Running Club's premier event of

the season.

We believe our new name better captures

the essence and expansion of this event from

one day to a fun- lled weekend of activities.

RunFest kicks o with a movie night, fol-

lowed by a two-day Health and Fitness Expo

and a hearty Pasta Lunch. e races begin on

Saturday with the Kids 2K, and the Anchorage

Mile, culminating with our signature race event on Sunday.

e Anchorage Running Club has always been proud to support

its local military community. For 2016, we are excited to add the

Military Mile to the popular Anchorage Mile. All branches of the

military will compete against each other in a friendly rivalry to see

which branch is the fastest. e Military Mile is open to military members from all branches and is free for active duty military.

Anchorage RunFest is a huge event, one that we could not achieve without the support and dedication of our generous sponsors, race committee and fantastic volunteers. is event is made extraordinary by their time, energy, and donations. On behalf of the Anchorage Running Club, thank you!

Have a great weekend. See you at the start line. Sharron Fisherman

Anchorage RunFest race director

, but its not the rst time. e race was

originally called the Snow Goose Marathon sponsored by

Chilkoot Charlie's. e race began at the famed Spenard water-

ing hole, and ended at Westchester Lagoon. In 1994 the sponsor-

ship changed to Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse and the race

became the Humpy's Classic featuring a marathon, half marathon

and a 10K. e course ran out and back, beginning and ending at

Westchester Lagoon. Not long a er the name was changed, the

start and nish of the Humpy's Classic was eventually moved to

Sixth Avenue in front of Humpy's itself. e name of the marathon

remained the same until 2008 when the Anchorage Running Club

brought the Humpy's Marathon under the Big Wild Life Runs

umbrella along with other race distances including a half mara-

thon, 5K and Kid's 2K. Each race was uniquely named with it's own

sponsor and logo.

In October of 2015, the race identity changed once again, becom-

ing the Anchorage RunFest. According to RunFest Race Director

Sharron Fisherman, the new name better re ects the atmosphere

surrounding the event, which still incorporates several sponsors for

each individual race.

" e new name nicely captures what we are ? a festival of run-

ning and tness events for all ages and abilities," Fisherman said.

RunFest boasts a weekend-long schedule of events for every run-

ner, from the very small to the elite. With races that range from a 2K

Kids run to a 49K Ultra and the addition of a family heath and safety

day as well as the popular Je Galloway Running School, RunFest has

grown to become a true celebration of running and healthy living.

Anchorage RunFest is the largest event and main fundraiser for

the Anchorage Running Club, a 501 (c) (3) nonpro t. Some of the

funds raised through this event are used to provide scholarships

to deserving high school seniors who are also runners, and some

are donated to high school athletic programs and to other athletic

events in the community that support the club's mission to promote

a healthy lifestyle through running and exercise.

job in the world. As Chief Running O cer

at Runner's World Magazine, he spends his

time traveling to races and running events all over

the world. Running has taken Yasso to so many

amazing places and a orded him the opportunity

to experience di erent cultures and meet all kinds

of people.

A ve-time Iron Man competitor, Yasso is one of

a handful of people to compete in races on all seven

continents including the Antarctica Marathon, the

Kilimanjaro Marathon and Comrades to name a

few. He is also a nisher of the grueling Badwater

146, a race from Death Valley to Mount Whitney,

Calif.

Yasso is the inventor of the Yasso 800s, a speed

workout in which runners should be able to accu-

rately predict their marathon nish times based on

how fast they can run 800 meters. With only a few

minor adjustments, the workout can be treadmill

compatible for those winter days when it's just too

cold to do speed work outside. Yasso's book, "My

Life on the Run: e Wit, Wisdom, and Insights of

a Road Racing Icon," chronicles his life as a runner ? why he started running, how it changed his life and how a crippling illness almost ended his career. He shares his stories of heatstroke, frostbite, heartache, triumphs and many other memories of his participation in more than 1,000 competitive races during his nearly three decades with Runner's World Magazine.

JEFF GALLOWAY RunFest has had many special guests and featured speakers make the trip to Alaska over the years, but none as dedicated to the event as Olympian, author and running expert Je Galloway. He and his wife, Barbara, have run the marathon together every year since 2010, making the pair RunFest regulars. Widely known for his marathon training programs and run/walk method, Galloway had an impressive running career before becoming one of the country's most successful running coaches. He was an allAmerican collegiate athlete and a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic Team, competing in the 10,000 meters at the Olympic games in Munich, Germany.

WHERE TO CATCH BART

Join Bart for a shakeout run on Friday morning ? meet in the Hotel Captain Cook lobby at 7:30 a.m.

Catch him at the Health and Fitness Expo on Friday and Saturday.

Bart will be one of the featured speakers at the pre-race Pasta Feed on Saturday.

Bart is planning to run the Moose's Tooth Marathon and will welcome runners as they cross the finish line on Sunday.

In addition to his Olympic career, Galloway was a member of the U.S. Track and Field Team in Europe, Russia and Africa. In 1973, he set an American record in the 10-mile road race with a time of 47:49.

Now, Galloway devotes his time to helping runners perform to the best of their ability and reach their marathon goals. He is a monthly columnist for Runner's World Magazine and has authored more than a dozen books about running. He has been a consultant for West Point, NASA, Homeland Security and many other corporations. He has coached more than 30,000 runners over the years the number of runners under Galloway's guidance continues to grow. He is the o cial training consultant for the RunDisney events, founder of the Galloway Training Program and the Director of Atlanta's Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk.

BARBARA GALLOWAY A talented runner in her own right, Barbara Galloway is the other half of Anchorage RunFest's most supportive duo. She had coauthored several books with her husband, (whom she appropriately met on the track) including: "Women's Complete Guide to Running," "Half Marathon: A Complete Guide for Women," "Running and Fat Burning for Women" and "Women's Complete Guide to Walking." Having run through two pregnancies and menopause, Barbara is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the unique challenges that female runners face. Barbara was a member of the Florida State women's track team and has completed more than 100 marathons and currently participates in roughly 12 marathons and 12 half marathons a year. She also plays on several USTA and ALTA tennis teams. She holds a master's degree in physical education and conducts running clinics during running retreats with her husband, Je , at Lake Tahoe and Athens, Greece.

Anchorage Running Club

Creating a strong community through running

, the

Anchorage Running Club (ARC) works hard to support and

sustain Anchorage's thriving running scene. e club started

as an incorporated not-for-pro t organization in 1982 in order to

provide recreational and competitive running and walking pro-

grams at all levels of ability.

e club has roughly 800 members of all shapes, sizes, ages and

abilities, from elite runners, middle-of-the packers, red-lantern

award winners and recreational walkers. It is the mission of the ARC

to encourage a healthy lifestyle through running and exercise.

In keeping with its mission, the ARC provides assistance to

many community races and events by lending out timing and race

equipment, providing race volunteers, and in some cases providing

nancial support. Races can be di cult to get started and the club's

mission extends beyond o cial ARC events. So, for some new run-

ning events, the ARC will provide nancial support for a short time

until the event can sustain itself.

groups, found training programs for speci c events and expanded their running network.

CLUB ORGANIZATION Club membership is based on the calendar year. For an individual member, a $25 fee allows discounts on running club events as well as access to club member exclusive runs and races. During the winter months, club members receive complementary access to the Anchorage Sports Dome each Wednesday. e ARC o ers family memberships and a military discount. From its membership, a nine-person volunteer board is elected to help the club ful ll its mission. Board members serve three-year terms and each year the board selects four of the board members to be the o cers and oversee club operations. Funds raised by the club consist of race fees and club dues, all of which go toward the support of community running events, the creation on new events throughout the year, and the ARC scholarship program.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES roughout the year, ARC club members informally gather on Wednesday nights for runs and walks. During the summer months, the club traditionally meets at Westchester Lagoon. During the winter, October through March, the club provides members with free access to the track at the Dome so members can continue their Wednesday night runs in a safe and protected environment. Known to ARC members as Winter Wednesday Nights at the Dome (WWND), these gatherings provide excellent networking opportunities for runners looking for training groups. rough the weekly meet-ups many members have formed their own training

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT e ARC places a priority on encouraging young Alaskans to live a healthy lifestyle. e club o en provides donations to organizations that are in keeping with the club's mission as well as providing some nancial support to high school athletic programs. e ARC provides donations to high-school groups and other charitable organizations who work at aid stations for ARC events and has provided funds to cover the cost of socks and shoes for children in need. Not all support is monetary as the club o en provides race bibs and medals for children's fun runs.
