Guidelines for completing current event assignments

Every Thursday you will have a current event assignment that will require you

to write a three-paragraph report summarizing an approved news story.

Occasionally, you will be asked to draw a political cartoon, or write a letter

to the editor instead of completing  a  current event.  Current events should

adhere to the following standards:

1- Type your assignment on a computer, double-spaced only, or write neatly

on the front side of your paper in blue or black ink.

2- News articles cannot be more than two weeks old.

3- You may use newspapers, magazines or Internet sources.

4- Do not use sports articles or crime stories.

5- Place full name, date, and period in the top right hand corner of your

paper.

6- Place the title of your article in the middle of the first line on your paper.

7- Place the source of your article in the middle of the second line of your

paper.

8- Place the dateline and the latitude / longitude of the dateline in the top

left hand corner of your paper (you will learn how to locate these

coordinates on a map).

9- Your first paragraph must consist of at least five complete sentences that

summarize the news article. Be sure to not simply   copy the news article

onto your paper.

10- Your second paragraph should consist of  at least five complete sentences

that explain who or what is affected by the issues presented  in your

article. This paragraph should also explain how they are affected.

11- Your third paragraph should consist of at least five sentences that present

your opinion on the issues presented in your article.  You must support

your opinion with facts from the article.

12- Attach the news article to the back of your paper.

13- Be prepared to share your current event with the class.

Political Cartoons

Political cartoons should adhere to the following standards:

A- Create an original cartoon about the topic we have been studying.

B- Your cartoon must contain six 3 x 3 frames.

C- Your cartoon must follow a logical sequence and tell a story.

D- Your cartoon must be hand drawn and colored.
