Guidelines for Humanities Current Events Analysis

Objective: The purpose of this news analysis is for you to have a regular chance to read and analyze news articles covering a variety of topics. Current events is a vital part of Humanities.

Articles may cover the following topics: Europe, Russia, South America, State News and/or Local News. DO NOT use sports articles, crime stories or human interest stories. Articles may not be more than one month old. You may use any newspaper, news magazine, or internet news source.

Deductions may be taken for the following: article is not on topic, work is sloppy or hard to read, incomplete sentences/poor grammar, leaving out any of the requirements(see below), paragraphs are not required length.

Current events may also be submitted via email by the due dates below.

Due Dates: Current events will be due the 3rd Tuesday of each month!

First Quarter: September 20th & October 18th

 

Second Quarter: November 15th & December 20th

 

Third Quarter: January 17th, February 21th, & March 20th

 

Fourth Quarter: April 17th & May 15th

Directions:

1. Cut out the article and attach (staple or glue) it to the back of your analysis worksheet.

2. Summarize the following information about the article: (please type or word process if possible)

• First paragraph - (5-7 sentences minimum) summarize the article. Be sure to include who, what, when, where, why, and how does this information relate to Humanities?

• Second paragraph - (3-5 sentences minimum) tell who or what is affected by this issue. How are they affected? Are there different sides to the issue? How is this information beneficial (helpful) to me?

• Third paragraph - (3-5 sentences minimum) give your opinion of this issue (NOT how the article was written). Be specific and back up your opinion with facts and details from the article (cite text).

Remember…

• Use sources such as: newspaper, news magazines, websites (ex. National Geographic, CNN, Fox News)

• Write 3 full paragraphs

• Write at least 5-7 sentences in the first paragraph & 3-5 sentences in the second and third paragraph

• Read the entire article

• Check your spelling

• Use an article from within 30 days of the next due date (ex. due September 25, use an article from August 25 or after)

• Write your summary in your own words. Don’t plagarize!
