Home Care Instructions After Vaccinations

Vaccinations can cause muscle soreness, grumpy behavior and in rare cases a true vaccine reaction. If your pet has a swollen face, vomits repeatedly and breaks out in hives within 1 or 2 hours after a vaccination, they are having a vaccine reaction. You should seek immediate veterinary care. If Community Veterinary Services is not available, go to the Pet Emergency Hospital listed below.

If your pet is sore or grumpy later in the day and even the next day it is more a side effect. It is more like how people feel after a tetanus shot. This is not likely an emergency and can be treated with Benadryl (diphenhydramine is the generic name). Below is a chart of doses for dogs and cats and giving Benadryl is very safe. These symptoms usually go away in a few days.

NEVER give Tylenol, aspirin, Advil, ibuprofen, Motrin or any over the counter pain medicine to cats!
