Adult Weight Management

How do I know if I’m too heavy?

As an adult, you can find out whether you are overweight or obese and whether your health may be at risk, by calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) and measuring your waist circumference.

On the whole BMI is a good estimate of whether you are carrying too much excess weight or not. BMI may be less accurate in very muscular people.

How to work out your BMI

|Body Mass Index (BMI) allows you to work out if you are overweight or not. BMI = weight in kilograms (kg) divided by height in |

|metres squared (m²) |

| |

|Example: 78kg |

|1.65 x 1.65m = 28.6 |

| |

|Now check the chart to see what the number means |

|BMI |Range |Message |

| | | |

|18.5 – 24.9 |Healthy Weight |Good – stay there |

| | | |

|25 – 29.9 |Overweight |Keep an eye on your weight |

| | | |

|30 and above |Obese |Too much – this is affecting your health |

Measuring your waist circumference can also give some information about your risk of developing problems (especially coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes). This is because it is not just whether you are carrying excess fat but where you are carrying it. Fat carried around your middle (“apple-shaped”) puts you at higher risk than fat stored around your hips and thighs (“pear-shaped”)

How do I measure my waist?

▪ Remove clothing from around your waist and stand with your feet slightly apart.

▪ Find the midway point between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bone.

▪ Relax, breathe out gently and using a flexible tape measure your waist circumference.

▪ Take care to ensure that the tape is level around your waist.
