BONES, MUSCLES AND SKIN CHAPTER 1

BODY ORGANIZATION

?The human body is organized by the different components that work together to perform all of the functions your body does. ?Going from the smallest to the largest, put these terms in order:

_3____ Organs _2____ Tissues

_1____ Cells _4____ Organ systems

1. The ___C_e_ll________ is the basic unit of structure and function in a living thing. 2. __T_i_ss_u_e_s_______ are a group of similar cells that perform the same function. There

are four types: ? __M__u_s_cl_e_t_is_s_u_e___________ composed of muscle cells and can contract or

shorten ? ___N_e_r_vo_u_s__ti_s_s_u_e_________ directs and controls electrical messages between the

brain and body ? ___C_o_n_n_e_c_ti_v_e_t_is_s_u_e_____ provides support for the body and connects all its parts

(ex. Bone & fat) ? __E_p_i_th_e_l_ia_l_t_is_s_u_e_______ covers the surfaces, inside & out of your body for

protection

_3____ Organs _2____ Tissues _1____ Cells 4_____ Organ systems

3. An _O_r_g_a_n_______ is a structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue. An organ performs a specific job. (ex. Heart, lungs, brain, stomach, skin etc...) 4. An __O_r_g_a_n_s_y_s_te_m___________ is a group of organs that work together to perform a major function. For example your esophagus, stomach, intestines, and colon are parts of the Digestive System.

ORGAN SYSTEMS

Digestive- Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients Nervous- Detects information from the environment and controls body functions. Skeletal- Supports and protects the body. Respiratory- Takes in oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide. Muscular- Enables movement of the body and internal organs. Endocrine- Controls many body processes by means of chemicals. Excretory- Removes wastes. Circulatory- Transports materials to and from cells.

HOMEOSTASIS

Brain pop homeostasis

?All of the body systems work together to maintain homeostasis which is the body's tendency to keep an internal balance. ?Homeostasis is the process by which an organisms internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment. ?What examples of homeostasis can you think of that your body does?

BELL RINGER

-Good morning, please take out your body system homework, note packet and science journal -Answer the following questions in your science journal

1. Put the following in order from smallest to largest:

Tissues, cells, organelles, organ systems, organs, nucleus, chromosome, gene

2. Which organ system matches this definition: "Transports materials to and from cells".

3. How is exercise an example of homeostasis?

4. How do you think the skeletal and muscular system works together?
