Cell Analogy Project

Introduction:

Each individual cell operates much like any complex system does. These systems could be your school, your city, an amusement park, a cruise ship, an automobile, an aircraft carrier, a sports venue or a factory. Each organelle in the cell does a job that allows the whole cell to function properly. In a city, there are many different jobs that have to be done in order for the city to run smoothly. For example, a city must have a waste management system (trash). Could you imagine what a city (school, venue, circus, etc) would be like if there wasn’t anyone picking up the trash? In this project, you are going to compare the organelles in a cell to the jobs needed to run a city (or another organization). You and Your partner will design a cell city on a poster; you will need to draw, and design all the parts of a city that correspond to cell organelles.

Instructions:

➢ Step 1. You will work with your elbow partner. You and your partner will be graded on your contributions to the project and ability to divide and accomplish tasks.

➢ Step 2. Choose whether you want to do a plant cell or animal cell.

o We will be doing a _______________ cell

➢ Step 3: Decide if you want to do a city or something else:

o Decide what parts of a city/system you will need for the cell type you chose.

➢ Step 4: Using the list of organelles: Match up which organelles belong to each city job. When you are finished have teacher check you off.

➢ Step 5: On a poster paper provided by teacher, draw, design, cut-out your city parts and organize them on the poster like a real city would be organized (See Examples)

▪ If you want to draw directly, you must do a rough sketch first before starting on your final draft.

o Number and Label each part of the city

o Create a Legend or Key to identify each part of the organization and the organelle it represents. Ex. #1 Town Hall = Nucleus.

➢ Step 6: Write an explanation of each analogy

o Write in complete sentences.

o Name the part of the city/organization, the cell part it corresponds with and why you selected that item to represent that cell organelle.

▪ Example: #1 Town Hall = Nucleus The town hall represents the nucleus because its function is to control the activities of the entire town. This is similar because the nucleus is the control center for the cell and it releases impulses that drive the workings of the cell.

➢ Step 7: Add the Features of a System either on your project or with your analogies: (Boundaries, System Properties, Interactions, Inputs/Outputs, Components.)

Organelle List: Chloroplast (Plant Cell Only), Nucleus, Lysosome, Vacuole, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Bodies, Cell Wall (Plant Cell), Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria, Ribosomes

|City |Organelle |Another type of System? Circus, Zoo, School,|

| | |Amusement Park, Sports Team/Arena |

|Power Plant | | |

|City Hall | | |

|Waste Management | | |

|Road System | | |

|Factory | | |

|Water Tower | | |

|City Limits | | |

|City Wall | | |

|Lawns/Gardens/Parks | | |

|Solar Energy Plants | | |

|Cars/Trucks | | |

Your final project will include:

1. Model of your Cell City (or System example)

a. You can do something other than a poster if you want…but the supplies are on you!

2. Legend/Key of each city part and cell organelle.

a. NOT analogies – Just labels and names

3. Written analogies for each Organelle and corresponding city part.

4. Features of a system on your poster or with your analogies.

Exceeding Opportunity – An exceeding project would include analogies that did more than explain simple functions of organelles. This project would also include detailed information about how the components of subsystems interacted, how the subsystems are organized, and how energy flows throughout the system. It might also include information that demonstrates an understanding of the cause and effect relationships between components and what result might occur if certain components became damaged or stopped working.
